A new study in Deutsches Ärzteblatt International suggests that radiotherapy intended for treatment of Hodgekin's disease in teenage girls and young women can increase risk of breast cancer.  The study led by Günther Schellong and colleagues in the German Working Group on the Long-Term Sequelae of Hodgkin's Disease shows that during an average 17.8 years, incidence for secondary breast cancer were 19% higher in young women who were treated with radiotherapy.  Radiotherapy intended for cancer treatment is known to raise risk of cancers like leukemia.   Exposure of the chest to radiation in cases like treatment of Hodgkin's disease and breast cancer and mammogram screening for breast cancer is known to increase risk of ischemic heart disease.
