Dear friend of CMD:

The Center for Media and Democracy has a long history of tracking Monsanto and I carry on that tradition today. From the fight for the bees and butterflies to the fight for the right to know what’s on our plate, we work to combat Monsanto's PR spin.

This year we exposed Monsanto’s fingerprints in unexpected places like Hawai’i and Oregon, with help from an innovative partnership with members of The Media Consortium.

We revealed how Oregon lawmakers sold out to ALEC and its corporate cronies rather than allow local democratic control over how its citizens grow food.

We showed how Hawai’i has become “ground zero” in the controversy over GMOs and pesticides, with big agriculture corporations developing $146.3 million in seeds on the tropical islands each year.

And we exposed how the chemical conglomerates have retaliated against local democracy in Hawai’i as well as Oregon, spending big to override the will of local citizens concerned about GMOs and pesticides.

But we can’t continue to hold the powerful to account without the support of independent thinkers like you.

Oregon’s ballot initiative to label GMOs in food lost by a few hundred votes this year, despite heavy industry spending to drown out democracy. But public pressure is still mounting.

Two federal bills have been introduced: one that would label GMOs across the country, and another that would override the states that have already passed labeling in favor of a weaker federal policy.

The country stands at a tipping point when it comes to agricultural policy and transparency.
