Saturday Aug 2, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Saffron supplementation can help reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness which often occurs after unaccustomed eccentric exercise and reduces performance. The study shows that 10-days saffron supplementation in a dose of 300 in one capsule significantly decreased the plasma creatine kinase (CK), plasma lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and prevented exercise induced pain.In the study, 39 inactive male college students were assigned to receive one capsule of dried saffron powder in a dose of 300 mg per day, indomethacin in a dose of 25 mg thrice a day or placebo one week before and three days after eccentric exercise. Those taking saffron did not experience a decline in maximum isometric and isotonic forces after eccentric exercise, but controls did.
