Wed Nov 15, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- A review published in 2015 suggests that taking soy protein supplements like soy protein isolates and soy protein concentrate may help metabolic syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and or metabolic syndrome.

The review based on randomized controlled trials released prior to March 2015 finds that soy protein supplementation significantly reduces fasting plasma glucose, fasting serum insulin, HOMA-IR, diastolic blood pressure, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and C-reactive protein in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus or metabolic syndrome.

Long term (6 or more months) soy supplementation significantly reduces fasting plasma glucose, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and c-reactive protein while short term (less than 6 months) soy protein supplementation significantly reduces fasting serum insulin and HOMA-IR in patients with diabetes mellitus and or metabolic syndrome.

Soy protein supplementation may help patients with diabetes mellitus or metabolic syndrome to improve their metabolic parameters. (David Liu)
