XXX, As if this week’s approval of Dow Chemical’s “Agent Orange” genetically engineered (GE) corn and soybeans1 wasn’t bad enough, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is also considering approval of Monsanto’s new GE dicamba-resistantsoybeans and cotton.2 If approved, millions more pounds of this hazardous chemical will be sprayed, polluting our food, water, and air. This is just the latest effort in the corporate chemical arms race, and it will cause serious harm to human health and the environment. Sign the petition to the USDA to reject these risky new GE crops! It all started with Monsanto’s Roundup Ready crops, genetically engineered to withstand heavy applications of Roundup (glyphosate) weed-killer without dying. As more of these “herbicide-resistant” crops were planted, the massive increase in glyphosate use triggered an epidemic of resistant “superweeds.” Now, in a misguided effort to fix the weed resistance problem created by first generation HR crops, biotechnology companies have genetically engineered new crops resistant to more toxic herbicides like dicamba. If approved, millions more pounds of dicamba will be sprayed together with continuing heavy use of glyphosate. At a time when farmers, citizens, and government have worked hard to limit our use of, and exposure to, hazardous pesticides like dicamba, approving this crop would take us backwards, seriously endangering human health and the environment. Tell the USDA to Reject Monsanto's Dicamba Resistant GE crops! 1. http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/press-releases/3467/usda-approves-new-ge-corn-and-soy-triggering-onslaught-of-millions-of-pounds-more-pesticides |
