Dear Readers,
I have bad news for everyone who eats.
The House and Senate Agriculture Committee leaders and their agribusiness lobbyist pals have been covertly writing the next federal farm bill, hoping to slip it into law through the top-secret Super Committee process without any public justification, open debate or a single vote. The industrial ag lobby also wants to create a new handout that would guarantee income to the biggest farm operations - even though they're already making record profits.
Environmental Working Group has been at the forefront of the fight to stop this Secret Farm Bill, which is bound to favor commodity-based processed food at the expense of healthy, organic food. I know you care about the food you eat and the policies that shape America's agriculture and food supply. So today, I want you to hear what EWG has been doing to stop the Secret Farm Bill over the last few weeks.
- We have contacted every Congressional office, asking every single member to speak out against the Secret Farm Bill.
- We put together a clearing house of facts about the Secret Farm Bill, media coverage of the issue and more.
- We launched a way for grassroots activists like you to get involved. Click here to tell your Congress members to say "NO" to the Secret Farm Bill.
- We have posted cutting-edge analysis on EWG's AgMag blog, which is widely read in the food and ag community. Key posts include "The Not So Secret Farm Bill" and "The Food Movement Must Fight a Secret Farm Bill."
Thanks to our all-out campaign on Capitol Hill to stop the Secret Farm Bill, as well as our long-term work to reform federal farm policy, we've been getting a lot of attention:
- Michael Pollan named me as one of the world's "seven most powerful foodies." I am beyond honored to be included on this list with First Lady Michelle Obama and Mark Bittman. Mark just wrote a thoughtful piece on the Secret Farm Bill that you should be sure to read.
- Carolyn Lochhead of the San Francisco Chronicle was one of the first to write about the issue, and she touted our efforts, noting that EWG was the first to sound the alarm about it. You can check out her blog here.
EWG is working hard to make sure the Super Committee looks out for you and your family, not big agribusiness and its slick lobbyists.
Sincerely,
Ken Cook
President, Environmental Working Group
