'greatness and beauty'
Dear Organic Consumer,
Passing through an airport recently, I picked up Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book, “David and Goliath.”
In the book’s introduction, Gladwell says he wants to explore two ideas:
The first is that much of what we consider valuable in our world arises out of these kinds of lopsided conflicts, because the act of facing overwhelming odds produces greatness and beauty.
There are days, especially after having lost three major political battles—GMO labeling ballot initiatives in California, Washington and Oregon—when it feels as though in this fight for the right to know, and in this larger battle against pesticide-intensive agriculture, we face overwhelming odds.
But there is “greatness and beauty” in this movement we’ve built together.
I believe our organization owes it to you, and we all owe it to ourselves and to future generations, to give this everything we’ve got.
I wouldn’t stay in this fight, and I wouldn’t continue to enlist your support, if I didn’t believe that ultimately, we will prevail.
We will wrap up this third-quarter online fundraising campaign at midnighttonight. Can you help us raise about $15,000 to meet our goal? We’ll put your money to work defending your right to labels on GMO foods. You can donate online, by phone or by mail—details here.
The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), which helped Monsanto write the DARK Act, has scheduled a lobbying day for October 7. The Senate Agriculture Committee is said to be planning a hearing on the bill sometime during the week of October 5 -9.
The poison-pushers and truth-deniers will be out in full force next week, spinning the facts on GMOs, and creating an impenetrable smokescreen to hide the truth about what the DARK Act—H.R. 1599—will actually do.
We know what Monsanto's H.R. 1599 will do. It will hand Monsanto the biggest political win it’s ever achieved. It will make it impossible to ever require labels on GMOs, to ever get GMO foods safety tested.
It will be a disaster for consumers.
With your help, we will face, and we will prevail against, overwhelming odds.
Please help us close out this fundraising cycle with a donation today. Every donation—$5, $10, $50—adds up. You can donate online, by phone or by mail. Details here.
Thank you.
