Dear Readers,

Did you know that right now, Europe and the USA are negotiating a huge corporate power grab affecting food safety and public health standards for millions of people?

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) is continuing talks with the European negotiators over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (or TTIP). The TTIP is often referred to as a "trade treaty," but if implemented, the TTIP could overturn democratically decided laws on everything from environmental protections to food safety.

European Union trade negotiators will arrive in Arlington, Virginia, next week (May 19-23) to begin the fifth round of TTIP talks.  Although TTIP negotiations cover a vast range of issues, food safety and regulatory standards are among the most contentious topics.  Food and farm issues being negotiated under TTIP include: GE crops, GE labeling, animal drugs and hormones, animal welfare, livestock antibiotics, chemically washed poultry, nanotechnology, and other issues.

In short, many of our important victories over the years are at risk. These negotiations are happening in secret and they are balanced in favor of corporations.

To help combat the lack of transparency in TTIP negotiations and to shine some light on what’s really at stake, Center for Food Safety has just released a new report, Trade Matters: Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)—Impacts on Food and Farming, examining the potential food and farming impacts of TTIP. Our international programs director, Debbie Barker, presented the report to Congress yesterday!
