Saturday July 25, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- In the medical journal Diabetes Care, Qianyi Wang from Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA and other scientists have recently reported that circulating trans fat was significantly associated with elevated risk for diabetes mellitus while dietary trans fat or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil was also positively yet non-significantly associated with the disease.
Previous studies have suggested that trans fat and saturated fat can raise the risk of diabetes mellitus. This current study determined which types of fatty acids may contribute to the elevated risk.
For the Cardiovascular Health study, blood samples from 2,929 adults aged 74 on average who were free of diabetes mellitus at enrollment in 1992 were analyzed for the concentrations of circulating phospholipid trans (t)-16:1n9, t-18:1, and cis (c)/t-, t/c-, and t/t-18:2. Dietary intake of trans fatty acids were also estimated based on data from a dietary survey from 4,207 adults who were free of diabetes mellitus at baseline.
Compared to participants in the lowest quartile of circulating t-16:ln9 and t-18:1, two types of trans fat, those in the highest quartile were 59% and 91% more likely, respectively, to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Also, those with the highest intake of total trans fat, t-18:1 or t-18:2 were found 38%, 32% or 41% more likely to develop diabetes mellitus, respectively, compared with those with the lowest intake. The associations became non-significant but still positive after adjustment for other dietary habits. (David Liu)
