Tuesday April 17, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- Prostate cancer is not uncommon, particularly in men who are successful (successful men are often more aggressive and have higher sex hormones).  But not many men know how to deal with the disease properly.  Mr. Warren Buffet was said to have been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer and decided to receive radiotherapy to treat the disease, which many experts believe are unnecessary.

In fact, prostate cancer in many cases are harmless.  In the case of Mr. Buffet, who is over 80 years old and experts believe elderly men like Mr. Buffet may more likely die from another cause than prostate cancer.  And screening and diagnosis and treatment may do more harm than good for a man older than 70 years.

In any case, a man's lifestyle and diet can be modified to better fight prostate cancer.  A new study in the April 10,2012 issue of International Journal of Molecular Medicine suggests that taking green tea supplements may help fight prostate cancer.

The stud led by Korean researchers found a new mechanism which explains how green tea catechins fight prostate cancer.

In the current study, Y.H. Lee and colleagues from The University of Suwon in Kyunggi-do. Republic of Korea tested green tea catechins, epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) to examine how these bio-active ingredients fight prostate cancer.

The researchers found EC,EGC and EGCG induced apoptosis in prostate cancer cells, suppressed agonisht-dependent androgen receptor activation and androgen receptor regulated gene transcription.  EGCG at 50 um was fond to downregulate androgen receptor acetylation, indicating that the green tea compound has an therapeutic effect against prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is expected to be found in about 200,000 men in the United States in 2012 and the disease is expected to kill tens of thousands in the country in 2012, according to the National Cancer Institute.

In addition to green tea extract, vitamin D is another thing prostate cancer patients can use to fight the disease.

We wish Mr.Buffet the best.
