Clinical study with NuShape - one of the first to document sustainable weight loss with a dietary supplement
Nashville, Tenn. (April 12, 2013) – NuSirt Sciences, Inc., a U.S.-based biotech-nutraceutical company, is presenting the results of four recent scientific studies at Experimental Biology 2013 (EB 2013), being held April 20-24, 2013. One study being presented is considered to be one of the first clinical trials to show meaningful, sustainable weight loss for a dietary supplement.
NuSirt Sciences discovers, studies, manufactures and distributes nutraceutical products to improve metabolic health risks (obesity, diabetes, inflammatory stress). The company’s flagship product is NuShape?, a novel, all-natural dietary supplement that is clinically demonstrated to accelerate fat oxidation. NuShape’s short-term efficacy in stimulating fat burning has been previously documented through research conducted in conjunction with the University of Tennessee. The latest study, being presented at EB 2013, is a 6-month clinical trial among 44 mildly obese individuals.
To evaluate the efficacy of the NuShape unique formulation (a synergistic combination of leucine and vitamin B6) in modulating body weight and body composition, two 24-week placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials were conducted. One trial of 20 people had no dietary caloric restriction and the other trial of 24 people had mild caloric restriction (a reduction of 500 calories per day).
In the caloric restriction trial, NuShape markedly enhanced weight and fat loss by 50-80% (compared to placebo) during the 24-week period. Study subjects taking the NuShape supplements lost an average of nearly 18 lbs. (17 lbs., 15 oz.) of body weight after 6 months. NuShape also resulted in significant fat loss in the absence of caloric restriction.
Dr. Michael Zemel, lead researcher of the study and chief scientific officer of NuSirt Sciences, is the former director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee and professor emeritus. Dr. Zemel explains the latest clinical study: “This study shows that if you mildly reduce your daily calories through exercise or caloric restriction, NuShape will substantially increase your success at sustainable weight loss. And if you don’t eat fewer calories or burn more through exercise, you may not lose weight but NuShape will still help you lose body fat.”
NuShape, launched in August 2012, is targeting health-conscious consumers who are tired of exaggerated claims about weight loss. NuShape’s approach is to focus on easily attainable lifestyle changes – without magic pills, food depravation or sacrifices, and with no known side effects.
Dr. Zemel will present other ground-breaking research at EB 2013, including a study in mice that assessed the potential role of irisin (a natural hormone produced by muscle in response to exercise) in mediating the effects of leucine-polyphenol combinations on energy metabolism. This study concluded that irisin can be induced independently of physical activity, and that leucine combined with low-dose resveratrol may represent an effective alternative approach to achieving the metabolic benefits of irisin, including adipose tissue browning and resistance to metabolic disease.
NuSirt also will present the findings of research led by Dr. Zemel regarding the activation of sirtuin signaling and downstream pathways, including mitochondrial biogenesis and fatty acid oxidation, as well as the synergistic effects of polyphenols with leucine and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) on energy metabolism.

About Dr. Michael B. Zemel, Chief Science Officer, NuSirt Sciences, Inc.
and Professor Emeritus, The University of Tennessee
Dr. Michael Zemel, the founder of NuShape?, is a recognized expert in endocrine and nutritional modulation of adipocyte metabolism, mitochondrialfunction, energy metabolism and oxidative and inflammatory stress. This work encompasses cellular and molecular approaches to the study of adipocyte, skeletal muscle cell and macrophage metabolism and interactions, animal modelling of predicted outcomes from cellular studies, and clinical studies in obesity and the metabolic syndrome to evaluate efficacy of approaches developed in his laboratory.
Dr. Zemel is the author of nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications, primarily describing his research in obesity, insulin resistance, and hypertension. He holds a number of patents, and his research has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control, USDA, NIH, the American Heart Association, and other public and private sector sponsors. His current work focuses on the regulation of human fat cell metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and novel modulation of weight control and diabetes and cardiovascular risk by nutrients and food components. Dr. Zemel received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980.
About NuSirt Sciences, Inc.
Your Health. Our Science. Naturally.
Founded in 2007, NuSirt Sciences, Inc. is a biotech company committed to providing broad access to natural therapies with pharmaceutical efficacy. NuSirt Sciences discovers, manufactures and distributes nutraceutical products that are natural, outcomes-based nutratherapeutic solutions to improve metabolic health risks (obesity, diabetes, inflammatory stress). NuSirt Sciences brings pharmaceutical rigor to natural supplements through its research and testing. The company has eleven patent applications and two issued.
NuSirt Sciences' first commercially available product addressing weight control is NuShape, a natural weight loss supplement activated through exercise. NuShape's tablets work with the body's own chemistry to burn fat and naturally extend the calorie-burning effects of exercise. This formula is supported with three clinical studies.
The company also manufactures NuControl? for healthy sugar metabolism. The company has a three-year pipeline of products that will target other metabolic risks, such as cardiovascular inflammation, high blood pressure as well as others.
With headquarters in Nashville, Tenn., the company has a dedicated research laboratory in Knoxville, Tenn. Visit www.NuSirt.com for more information.
