Chenpi extract prevents diabetes mellitus, obesity
Rutgers researchers fed obesity-prone mice a high-fat diet with 0.25% or 0.5% chenpi extract for 15 weeks; those mice escaped the obesity, fatty liver and diabetic symptoms seen on the diet alone. The effect tracked with AMPK activation in fat tissue.
Spet 28, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggests that chenpi extract may be enlisted as a dietary supplement to effectively prevent obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2 in people who eat a high fat diet or Western diet.
Chenpi is the aged and dried peel of the plant Citrus reticulata Blanco. In China, chenpi is used as a traditional medicine to protect against inflammation and as a culinary seasoning ingredient and dietary supplement.
The study shows that mice fed a high fat diet to induce obesity and diabetes mellitus if also fed 0.25 or 0.5% chenpi extract for 15 weeks did not develop high fat diet induced obesity, hepatic steatosis, and diabetes mellitus while mice fed the same high fat diet but without the chenpi extract suffered conditions like obesity, hepatic steatosis and diabetic symptoms.
The chenpi extract used in the study was enriched with a high content of a compound called 5-demethylated polymethoxyflavones. The Rutgers University researchers found that the protective effect against obesity and diabetes mellitus was apparently associated with the activation of 5'-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in adipose tissue.
AMPK is an enzyme that plays a role in cellular energy homeostasis. Research conducted in Britain suggests that anti-diabetic drug metformin stimulates AMPK leading to decreased glucose production in the liver and reduce insulin resistance in the muscle, which seems to protect against diabetes mellitus. For that reason, metformin usually cause weight loss and reduced appetite.
The evidence from the current study seems to indicate that chenpi extract acts like metformin in preventing obesity and diabetes mellitus type 2.
Another powerful dietary supplement that can be employed to prevent diabetes mellitus from developing in people with prediabetes is curcumin, a key ingredient found in turmeric, according to a study conducted in India. (David Liu)
