A Colorado meat processor has issued a voluntary recall for ground bison meat and tenderized bison steaks due to possible contamination of E coli O157:H7, the USDA said on Saturday.
Rocky Mountain Natural Meats recalled 66,000 pounds of six ground meat and steak products produced in May but set to expire in June as indicated by "Sell or freeze by" on the label.
The company said on its website the following five retail products are subject to the recall. Note that one product sold to restaurants was not listed.
One pound packages:
The Buffalo Guys Ground Bison with UPC# 852584 00030 9 and a package date of 014
12oz. Packages:
The recall was issued after five cases of E.coli O157:H7 illness in Colorado reported last month were found associated with the company's ground bison meat products, Reuters cited USDA as saying in a release. One case was also reported in New York.
The USDA was reportedly working with state health agencies in Colorado and New York and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the company to look into the issue.
The recalled products were distributed through Hannaford, King Soopers, Market Basket, Price Chopper and Whole Foods, the USDA said.
E.coli 0157:H7 infection can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and severe stomach pain. In rare yet severe cases, the infection can lead to kidney failure.
Food consumers who have any questions about the recall may call 1-800-325-4164.
