Friday Nov 27, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study suggests that taking fish, which is made of omega-3 fatty acids, and eating olive oil may help fight prostate cancer.

For the study, prostate cancer cells were treated with oleic acid or fish oil.  It was found that fish oil but not oleic acid suppressed prostate cancer viability.

Oleic acid on the other hand was found to be a potent agent that inhibits de novo fatty acid synthesis. Oleic acid induced the inhibition faster than fish oil.  With oleic acid, the activity of fatty acid synthase decreased within 24 hours while it took a longer time for fish oil to decrease the activity.

Oleic acid is found high in olive oil and sunflower oil.
