A Medtronic product known as Infuse indicated for spinal procedures may boost cancer risk, researchers suggested Thursday at a national conference for spinal surgeons. The bioengineered bone-growth protein is often used in patients receiving spinal fusion procedures. Dr. Eugene Carragee of Stanford University's School of Medicine was cited by Reuters as saying at the conference that recent findings showed patients receiving Infuse had a 2.5 times greater risk of pancreatic, breast and prostate cancers. The Spine Journal already alerted medical professionals in a report released in June that use of Infuse can cause cancer, sterility in men, infections, bone dissolution and worsened back and leg pain among other things.
