Resveratrol helps type 2 diabetes mellitus

Monday June 8, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- Resveratrol a polyphenol found in red grape and red wine may help people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, but may not be a curative agent against the disease, according to a review article published recently in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.

Resveratrol is known to be effective in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus in animal models, but previous studies on its efficacy in humans remain inconsistent.

Professor James M. Smoliga from High Point University in High Point, NC, USA and colleagues reviewed data from studied involving 196 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and found that resveratrol supplementation was more effective than placebo at improving some cardiometabolic parameters including systolic blood pressure, hemoglobin A1c, and creatinine.

However, the researchers found resveratrol supplementation could not affect "fasting glucose, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, diastolic blood pressure, insulin, triglycerides, LDL, or HDL cholesterol."

The review concluded that "significant improvements in multiple cardiometabolic biomarkers and an excellent safety profile support resveratrol as a leading candidate as an adjunct to pharmacological management of T2DM (type 2 diabetes mellitus)."

Previous studies show that many supplements may be used to effectively prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus in the first place.   An Indian study suggests that taking curcumin in a dose of 6 grams per day can effectively prevent the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in people with prediabetes.
