Previous studies have shown that use of statins is associated with increased risk of diabetes mellitus. A new study in JAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes finds the same association among HIV carriers.
Researchers compared HIV outpatients who used statins with those who did not to see if there is any difference in incidence of diabetes mellitus in these two populations. Subjects enrolled in HIV Outpatient Study were followed up at eight HIV clinic sites between 2002 and 2011.
Researchers found the risk of diabetes mellitus in HIV outpatients who used statins were moderately increased, compared to the risk of the metabolic disorder in HIV outpatients who did not take statins. (david Liu, PH.D.)
