Dartmouth researchers measured arsenic in foods sweetened with organic brown rice syrup. One infant formula held 60 ppb, against the EPA's 10 ppb limit for drinking water, and 22 cereal bars with rice ingredients held 8 to 128 ppb versus 8 to 27 ppb in bars without.

Dr. Oz Proves This Fruit Juice Can be Toxic
Tests by Consumer Reports and Dr. Oz found arsenic in fruit juices, especially apple juice, with 10 percent of 88 Consumer Reports samples above the federal 10 ppb drinking-water limit. No safety limit covers food or drink, and Consumer Reports is calling for standards.

Arsenic exposure linked to hypertension
A meta-analysis of 11 studies found people with the highest arsenic exposure had a 27% higher risk of hypertension than the least exposed. EPA caps arsenic in drinking water at 10 ppb; an FDA study reported 50 ppb in chicken meat in 2011.

Arsenic, Antibiotics and Asthma Drugs in Your Turkey? Yes!
A rough year for turkey producers: studies found turkey carried two to three times the antibiotic-resistant staph of other meats, Pfizer kept its arsenic-containing Histostat for turkeys after dropping the chicken version, and Cargill recalled 36 million pounds over salmonella.

High Arsenic Found in Some Brands of Apple Juice
The Dr. Oz Show reported testing that found Nestle/Gerber apple juice with up to 36 parts per billion of arsenic, above the EPA's 10 ppb drinking-water limit. The FDA called releasing the results irresponsible and misleading, noting the figures covered total arsenic, organic and inorganic.
Chemical
Carcinogenic arsenic found in chickens
Alpharma, a Pfizer subsidiary, agreed to stop selling the poultry drug roxarsone after an FDA study found inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen, in the livers of 100 broiler chickens fed it. Roxarsone had been approved since 1944 to curb parasites and promote growth.

More proof smoking damages DNA
A Chemical Research in Toxicology study reports that chronic arsenic exposure damaged DNA and increased cell survival in human prostate epithelial cells, altering DNA repair gene expression and raising mitochondrial transcription factor A. Arsenic is a known carcinogen, including for the prostate.
Chemical
Arsenic in well water higher than thought
A US Geological Survey sampling of 2,100 private wells in 48 states found more than 20 percent held at least one contaminant of potential health concern, most often radon or arsenic. Private wells supply about 43 million Americans and are not federally regulated.
Vitamins
Nutrient protection against arsenic toxicity
Among 165 six-year-olds in Bangladesh, researchers found that shortfalls in folate and the amino acid cysteine may hinder arsenic metabolism, which depends on two methylation steps. The children appeared to metabolize and excrete arsenic more efficiently than adults.
Vitamins
Nutrient protection against arsenic toxicity
Researchers measuring urinary arsenic metabolites and blood micronutrients in 165 six-year-olds in Bangladesh report that low folate and cysteine may hamper arsenic methylation, and that children appear to metabolize and excrete arsenic more efficiently than adults.
