A comic riff on premenstrual syndrome, cataloguing the bingeing, insomnia, mood swings and clumsiness that come with it, and complaining that science studies OxyContin and Ecstasy but not a condition affecting half the world.

How a Physician Cured Her Son's Autism...
Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, a neurologist whose own son was diagnosed autistic at three, describes Gut and Psychology Syndrome and her GAPS nutritional program. She says autism was about 1 in 10,000 when she graduated in 1984 and is now diagnosed in 1 child in 66 in parts of Britain.
Cancer
Red meat linked to elevated breast cancer risk
In a Vanderbilt study of 2,386 breast cancer cases and 1,703 controls, women eating the most well-done red meat were 50 percent more likely to be diagnosed than those eating the least. The link ran stronger among postmenopausal women.
Cancer
Vitamin C, k3 may be enlisted to cure leukemia
In Jurkat and K562 leukemia cell lines, vitamin C combined with vitamin K3 triggered apoptosis through an oxidative stress pathway involving NF-kB, p53, c-Jun and caspase-3. Cell death peaked at ratios of 1 to 1,000 and 1 to 100. Animal studies are still needed.

Can Vitamin D3 in Combination with This Spice Reverse Alzheimer's Disease Progression?
Researchers tested vitamin D3 with curcumin as immune stimulants to help clear amyloid-beta from the brain, reporting additive effects in one macrophage type and an effect from D3 alone in another. Mercola adds a theory that vitamin D deficiency contributed to Mozart's death.

What Common Foods May Kill Multi-Drug Resistant Cancers?
Green Med Info's tally of more than 60 studies puts curcumin first, with 26 studies on killing cancer cells including drug-resistant ones, and paprika second with six. Carotenoids, lycopene, sulforaphane, flavonoids and zeaxanthin also showed an effect.
Cancer
Drinking coffee may reduce risk of breast cancer
Postmenopausal women drinking five or more cups of coffee a day were 57 percent less likely to have ER-negative breast cancer than those drinking one or fewer, in a Swedish analysis of 2,818 cases and 3,111 controls. The study was not a trial and cannot show cause.

This Simple Drink Improved Stomach Acid in Just One Minute...
A study in Digestive Diseases and Sciences compared water, antacid, ranitidine and three proton pump inhibitors: water raised gastric pH above 4 within one minute and antacid within two, while most of the drugs took more than two hours but acted for longer.
Cancer
Eating vegetables, fruits cuts risk of cervical cancer
A case-control study of 268 Uruguayan cervical cancer patients linked a mostly plant-based diet to 40 percent lower risk, while women eating red meat and drinking alcohol were 79 percent more likely to be diagnosed. Smoking showed no association in this group.

Green Tea helps fight Alzheimer's - new study
In cell tests, green tea's EGCG and a grape skin extract each cut amyloid-beta-triggered neurotoxicity by 40%, but only EGCG blocked amyloid fibril formation and aggregation, which the Adelaide researchers say is how it protects neural cells.

Keeping Your Bones Healthy in the Summertime
A British Medical Journal study found people consuming the most calcium, up to almost 1,200 mg a day, had no reduction in fractures or osteoporosis. The piece recommends 15 to 30 minutes of sunlight for vitamin D and greens and beans, noting broccoli's calcium absorbs about twice as well as milk's.

Eating fruit, vegetables cuts death risk of ischemic heart disease
Obesity
The Amazing Oil That Trims Women's Waistlines
In a trial of 40 women following a reduced-calorie diet and daily walks, only the group supplementing with coconut oil showed a reduction in waist circumference. The soybean oil group saw total cholesterol and LDL rise while HDL fell; the coconut oil group did not.
Obesity
Fat substitutes linked to weight gain (PR)
Purdue researchers report in Behavioral Neuroscience that rats on a high-fat diet given both regular Pringles and olestra-made Pringles Light ate more, gained more weight and built more fatty tissue than rats fed only the high-calorie chips, and kept the weight after the chips stopped.

Copper folds protein into precursors of Parkinson's plaques (PR)
NC State physicists ran computer simulations to identify how copper binds to alpha-synuclein, the protein that makes up the fibrillar plaques seen in Parkinson's disease, and speeds its misfolding. The authors say the mechanism matters for studying progression and for future treatments.
Obesity
'Good Gut Bacteria' May Help Fight Obesity
Rats fed a lactic acid bacterium from before birth into adulthood put on significantly less weight than rats eating a similar diet, and had less low-level inflammation. Dr. Mercola adds that fermented foods such as kefir, natto and pickled vegetables carry the same bacteria.
Cancer
Sun CAN Actually Help Protect You Against Skin Cancer
Mercola argues sunscreen campaigns have left many people short of vitamin D, citing research that very low vitamin D is a major melanoma risk factor and studies in which melanoma patients with more sun exposure were less likely to die and had less aggressive tumours.
