In diabetic mice, a combination of selenium, vitamin E, vanadium and chromium improved disordered glucose metabolism and protected pancreatic islet beta-cells, apparently by shifting Th1 and Th2 cytokine expression, Jilin University researchers report.

Cancer
Vitamin d deficiency linked to high risk for colorectal cancer
Comparing 229 colorectal cancer cases with 343 controls, University of Hawaii researchers found serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D inversely associated with the disease: subjects above the lowest quintile of under 16.8 ng/mL had a 37 to 46 percent lower risk. The study was not a clinical trial.
Other Diseases
Vitamin D could fight Crohn's disease
McGill researchers found vitamin D acts directly on the beta defensin 2 gene, which encodes an antibacterial peptide, and on NOD2, which alerts cells to invading bacteria and viruses. Lead author John White says the data suggest for the first time that vitamin D deficiency can contribute to Crohn's.
Other Diseases
Improved nutrition mitigates ALS disease
A Clinical Nutrition review by York University researchers concluded ALS treatments do not yield good outcomes, and suggested vitamin E, folic acid, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, Ginkgo biloba, melatonin and l-carnitine, plus low to moderate exercise, may mitigate the disease's effects.
Obesity
Low Carb Diet Lowers Blood Pressure
In 146 patients with heart disease or diabetes followed 48 weeks, a low-carbohydrate diet and the weight-loss drug orlistat produced similar weight loss, 9.5 versus 8.5 percent. Only the low-carb group's blood pressure fell, 6 percent systolic and 4.5 points diastolic.
Other Diseases
Vitamin supplements may help multiple sclerosis
The FDA approved Ampyra to improve walking in multiple sclerosis, though it can cause seizures and other side effects. A Dutch study of food diaries from 80 MS patients found they ate less folate, magnesium, zinc and selenium than the recommended daily allowance.

Foods That Chronic Pain Sufferers Need to Avoid
Mercola writes that fibromyalgia pain may involve central sensitization that certain food chemicals aggravate, and recommends limiting sugar and fruit juice, cutting back on grains, especially wheat and gluten, eating fresh unprocessed food and avoiding caffeine.
Obesity
Research on Childhood Obesity May Help Fight Epidemic
ARS-funded researchers at Baylor's Children's Nutrition Research Center found only 3 percent of kids' combo meals at 10 Houston fast-food chains met seven National School Lunch Program standards. Meals that failed averaged 2.3 calories per gram against 1.5 for those that passed.
Cancer
Cancer News: Green Tea Prevents Lung Cancer
A Taiwanese case-control study comparing 170 lung cancer patients with 340 healthy people found that drinking at least one cup of green tea a day was associated with sharply lower lung cancer risk among both smokers and non-smokers, with growth factor genotypes also shaping the risk.

Dennis Hopper losing cancer battle: What you need to know
Dennis Hopper, 73, is reported to be losing his fight with prostate cancer after it spread to his bones; he had been treated since 2002. The article then reprints a roundup of earlier research on diet and prostate cancer, including a 2007 review of plant-based diets.
Diabetes
Diabetes News: Mediterranean diet better than low fat diet for diabetics
Over four years, 44 percent of 215 newly diagnosed overweight diabetes patients on a Mediterranean diet needed glucose-lowering drugs, against 70 percent on a low-fat diet. The Mediterranean group also lost more weight and improved more on glycemic and coronary risk measures.
Other Diseases
Coffee health news: Caffeine drinking linked to less severe liver fibrosis
Among 177 chronic hepatitis C patients undergoing liver biopsy, those consuming about 308 mg of caffeine a day, roughly 2.25 cups of coffee, had milder fibrosis. Each extra 67 mg tracked with 14% lower odds of advanced fibrosis; caffeine from tea showed no such effect.

Soy cuts breast cancer risk - study
Zhang C and colleagues compared 438 Chinese women with breast cancer to 438 age-matched healthy women and found the highest soy isoflavone intake tied to 46% less risk and the highest soy protein intake to 38% less, across receptor status.
Heart & Blood
Green tea cuts risk for heart disease and stroke
A Circulation Journal study of 520 Chinese patients having their first coronary arteriography linked green tea drinking to a 38 percent lower risk of coronary atherosclerosis. Men using 125 grams or more of leaves a month had 64 percent lower risk; no link appeared among the women.
Cancer
Want to defeat your cancer? Eat less!
University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers exposed healthy and precancerous human lung cells to normal and reduced glucose. Restricting glucose let the healthy cells live longer and hastened death of the precancerous ones, with effects on the telomerase and p16 genes.
Other Diseases
Diet high in methionine could increase risk of Alzheimer’s (PR)
Temple University researchers fed mice a methionine-rich diet for eight months and found raised homocysteine and up to 40 percent more amyloid plaque in their brains. Domenico Praticò says earlier human work already tied high homocysteine to greater dementia risk.

Roy Edward Disney dies from stomach cancer
A Walt Disney spokesman said the 79-year-old executive, nephew of Walt Disney, had battled the disease for a year and died in Newport Beach, California. Stomach cancer is diagnosed in 21,000 Americans a year and kills 10,000.
Diabetes
Coffee and tea reduce diabetes risk
Pooling 18 studies of 457,922 people, researchers found those drinking three to four cups of coffee a day had about a 25 percent lower risk of type 2 diabetes, with each extra cup linked to a 7 percent reduction. Heavy tea drinkers had about a fifth lower risk.
