Among 4,384 Taiwanese Buddhists, women who avoided all meat were about 33 percent less likely to have diabetes and men about 50 percent, even though the omnivores ate mostly plants with little meat or fish. The vegetarians also ate more fiber, folate and whole grains.

Study examines probiotic use in preventing gastrointestinal disorders in infants (PR)
Flavia Indrio of Aldo Moro University and colleagues randomized 554 Italian newborns to Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 or placebo for 90 days. At three months the probiotic group averaged 38 minutes of crying a day against 71, fewer regurgitations, and about $119 lower costs per patient.
Cancer
Melatonin may slow tumor growth in certain breast cancers (PR)
In an early-stage animal study published in PLoS One, melatonin appeared to slow tumour growth and cell production and block new blood vessel formation in ER-negative breast cancer models. Researchers say the drug and its effect on tumours can now be traced.
Cancer
High folic acid promotes growth of breast cancer in rats (PR)
Folic acid at 2.5 to five times the daily requirement significantly promoted the growth of existing pre-cancerous and cancerous cells in the mammary glands of rats, Dr. Young-In Kim's lab reported in PLOS ONE. Breast cancer survivors in North America commonly take such supplements.
Cancer
Breast cancer risk higher in alchol drinkers
Over 12.4 years, women drinking 5 to 9.9 grams of alcohol a day had 23% higher breast cancer risk than non-drinkers, and those drinking over 30 grams 53% higher. Researchers say even light to moderate drinking raises risk; the pattern varied across ethnic groups.
Heart & Blood
Sedentary behavior and low physical activity linked to heart failure in men
A Kaiser Permanente study in Circulation: Heart Failure followed more than 82,000 men aged 45 and older for over a decade and found those reporting high sedentary time and low physical activity had 2.2 times the risk of heart failure of the most active, least sedentary men.

Exposure to cold temperatures can help boost weight loss
Regular exposure to mild cold may be a sustainable way to lose weight, Dutch researchers argue in Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism, since calorie-burning brown fat persists in adults. They suggest letting indoor temperatures drift, but long-term effects are untested.
Other Diseases
Obesity May Cause Early Death
An American Journal of Public Health analysis of 16,868 people found obesity associated with a 20% higher risk of death, with obese participants dying about 1.6 years earlier from all causes and 1.6 to 5 years earlier from cardiovascular disease than normal weight participants.
Heart & Blood
High sodium not linked to hypertension if potassium intake is high
Among 1,285 adults aged 25 to 64, those with a high sodium-to-potassium ratio had systolic and diastolic blood pressure 8 and 7 mmHg higher than those with a low ratio. The authors conclude that high sodium intake is not linked to higher blood pressure when potassium intake is high.
Diabetes
Inorganic arsenic can raise type 2 diabetes mellitus risk
Pooling 17 studies, researchers led by Dongfeng Zhang found people exposed to high inorganic arsenic in drinking water were 75% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with the lowest exposure, with each 100 ug/L increment linked to a 13% higher risk.
Diabetes
Ginger powder helps type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a randomised, double-blind trial of 88 people with type 2 diabetes, three 1-gram ginger powder capsules daily for eight weeks lowered fasting blood sugar 10.5%, while the placebo group's rose 21%. HbA1c also fell, and insulin measures differed significantly between the groups.
Diabetes
Eating fish to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus?
Among 2,212 Finnish men followed 19.3 years, those in the highest quartile of intake of EPA, DHA and DPA had 33 percent lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Dietary ALA, fish and hair mercury showed no significant link, and the piece cautions this was not a trial.
Cancer
Dietary phytoesterols prevent breast cancer growth
In mice prone to breast cancer and fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet, dietary phytosterol supplements reduced mammary hyperplastic lesions and total tumor burden, the authors report.
Cancer
Added sugar linked to high risk of endometrial cancer
A case-control study comparing 424 women with endometrial cancer to 398 controls found the highest added sugar intake carried an 84 percent higher risk, rising further among women with a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.85 or more. The design cannot prove sugar caused the increase.
Cancer
Vitamin C increases efficacy of radiotherapy in cancer treatment
Japanese researchers applied 2.5 mM vitamin C to human leukemia cells and irradiated them at 2 Gy, getting an additive cytotoxic effect with lower mitochondrial membrane potential and more apoptosis. The Oncology Reports findings counter the worry that antioxidants blunt radiotherapy.

Two Exciting Alzheimer’s Advances: A Novel Early Detection Test Using Peanut Butter, and a Study Evaluating Coconut Oil
Mercola describes a small University of Florida pilot study in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences that tested smell sensitivity in 24 patients with mild cognitive impairment by measuring the distance at which each open nostril could detect peanut butter.
Diabetes
Red wine compound resveratrol fights type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a 45-day trial, type 2 diabetes patients taking one gram of resveratrol daily alongside standard medication showed lower systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, HbA1c, insulin and insulin resistance, and higher good cholesterol, compared with baseline. Liver and kidney markers did not change.

Omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids promote breast cancer
A review argues that omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, found in soybean and corn oil, can promote breast cancer development, while extra virgin olive oil, high in monounsaturated fat, has been associated with reduced risk of the disease.
