A study in Neurology found people with higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins B, C, D and E were less likely to show the brain shrinkage tied to Alzheimer's and scored better on thinking and memory tests, while high trans fat diets tracked with the opposite.

Could This be the Key Factor Spiking the Rise in Dementia and Alzheimer's?
In a two-year trial of 168 volunteers with mild cognitive impairment, brains of those taking high-dose folic acid, B6 and B12 shrank 0.76 percent a year against 1.08 percent on placebo. Mercola notes about half of people diagnosed with MCI go on to develop Alzheimer's within five years.

B Vitamins and the Aging Brain Examined
In the Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging, which enrolled nearly 1,800 Hispanic seniors, blood analysis tied lower folate to dementia symptoms and cognitive decline even though under 1 percent were deficient. Among women only, the lowest third for folate had twice the depression symptoms.

B-vitamins linked to lower risk of depression
Following 3,503 adults aged 65 or older for 12 years, researchers tied each extra 10 mg of vitamin B-6 and 10 micrograms of B-12 in total intake to 2% lower annual risk of depressive symptoms. Dietary intake alone showed no such association.

B vitamins fight migraines
In a six-month trial at Australia's Genomics Research Center, 52 diagnosed migraine sufferers took either folic acid with vitamins B6 and B12 or a placebo. Those on the vitamins cut homocysteine 39% while controls saw no change, and migraine disability fell from 60% to 30%.
