Harvard researchers compared 1,042 postmenopausal women with breast cancer to 1,794 without and found those with 50% or more breast density had triple the risk of women below 10%. Denser breasts went with in situ, larger, estrogen-receptor-negative and higher-grade tumours.

Breast density, lobular involution linked to breast cancer risk
Among 2,666 women with benign breast disease followed 13 years at the Mayo Clinic, 6.5 percent developed breast cancer. Breast density and extent of lobular involution acted as independent risk factors, and dense breasts with no involution carried the higher risk.

Chemo Reduces Breast Density
Among 54 breast cancer patients imaged by MRI at UC Irvine, breast density fell 10% after AC chemotherapy and 12.7% after AC plus taxane, with bigger drops in younger patients and after more cycles. Whether that lowers risk in the other breast is unknown.
