Ben Liu's meta-analysis of seven cohort and six case-control studies found men eating cruciferous vegetables were 10% less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Cohort studies alone showed no significant link; case-control studies suggested up to 21%.

Vitamins
Low intake of vitamin k1 linked high risk for hip fractures
Among 2,807 Norwegians aged 71 to 75, those in the lowest quartile of vitamin K1 intake were 57 percent more likely to suffer a hip fracture. Vitamin K2 showed no link. K1 comes mainly from green leafy vegetables and some vegetable oils.
Supplements
Sprouts plus supplements could boost broccoli’s anti-cancer ability
Four volunteers ate broccoli sprouts, broccoli powder, or both; blood and urine three hours later showed nearly twice the sulforaphane absorption from the combination. Sprouts supply myrosinase, the enzyme powder lacks and overcooking destroys.
Food
Vegetables show potential help to cancer treatment and prevention
Isothiocyanates from broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables may help prevent cancer by supporting the tumor suppressor gene p53, researchers suggest. In tests on lung, breast and colon cancer cells, the compounds stripped away decayed p53 while sparing the normal form.
Phytochemicals
Broccoli Component Limits Breast Cancer Stem Cells
Sulforaphane, a compound in broccoli, targeted and killed breast cancer stem cells and prevented new tumors in mice and cell cultures. Current chemotherapies do not work on these cells. Science Daily notes the concentrations used exceeded what eating broccoli provides.
Cancer
Broccoli compound fights breast cancer
University of Michigan researchers injected sulforaphane from broccoli into mice with breast cancer and counted fewer cancer stem cells in the tumors. Cells from treated mice could not seed new tumors, and human breast cancer cells behaved similarly.
Diet
Broccoli cuts stomach cancer risk
Fifty Japanese volunteers ate 2.5 ounces of broccoli or alfalfa sprouts daily for two months; the broccoli group's H. pylori colonization fell 40 percent while alfalfa showed no change. Levels rebounded after people stopped, and the bacteria were never fully eradicated.
Phytochemicals
Broccoli compound may help prevent respiratory inflammation
In a Clinical Immunology study, 65 volunteers took broccoli or alfalfa sprout preparations for three days. Those given 100 grams or more of broccoli sprouts showed significantly higher antioxidant enzymes in nasal airway cells, with 200 grams producing the largest increases.
Phytochemicals
Vegetable-based drug could suppress melanoma
Penn State researchers swapped selenium for sulfur in isothiocyanates from cruciferous vegetables and report in Clinical Cancer Research that the resulting isoselenocyanates inhibited tumor growth in mice by 50 to 60 percent at very low doses, more safely than conventional therapy.
