Chinese researchers reported in PLoS One that 1 mM sodium fluoride disturbed gene expression in human embryonic stem cells, and that 2 mM or more cut viability and proliferation by promoting apoptosis. They suggest it might interfere with early human embryogenesis.

Silica used in foods, cosmetics and drugs harm cells, DNA
Chinese researchers built a method to gauge nanoparticle toxicity and found both sphere- and rod-shaped mesoporous silica nanoparticles were cytotoxic and genotoxic, inducing oxidative stress and chromosomal aberrations. Rod-shaped particles did more damage than spheres.

Calgary Fluoride Study Fatally Flawed; Key Data Omitted
FAN says a new Calgary study claiming that ending fluoridation caused a spike in cavities omitted data from the city's oral health surveys showing decay was already rising before fluoridation ended in May 2011 and continued at the same rate afterward.

Pregnant women shouldn't eat too much fish
Drawing on 26,184 pregnant women and their children in 11 countries, a JAMA Pediatrics study found children of mothers who ate three or more servings of fish a week were more likely to be obese at ages two, four and six and grew faster early on. The effect was stronger in girls than boys.

Aluminum exposure raises dementia risk
A meta-analysis in Neuroscience Letters pooled eight cohort and case-control studies covering 10,567 people and found those chronically exposed to aluminum were 70% more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Aluminum turns up in cheese, baked goods, baking powder and drinking water.

Fluoridation: Worsening the Lead Crisis in Flint, and Beyond
A Fluoride Action Network special report argues that fluoridation may be intensifying America's lead crisis by making water more corrosive, easing lead's uptake into blood and worsening its effects on the brain, and says the problem extends well beyond Flint.

“Glyphosate’s impact on the neurological system: Autism, IBS & Alzheimer’s”
Jeffrey Smith invites readers to a free February 16, 2016 webinar with Dr. Zach Bush on gut problems such as leaky gut, gluten intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome, noting glyphosate use has risen almost 15-fold since Roundup Ready crops arrived in 1996.

New Video: fluoride discussed on the Dr. Oz show
Erin Brockovich spent a 13-minute segment on the Dr. Oz show on February 1 opposing water fluoridation and discussing fluoride in foods, beverages and toothpaste. FAN welcomes the exposure while disputing Oz's claim that dental fluorosis is fluoride's only adverse effect.

BPA free plastic may not be safer
A UCLA study in Endocrinology reports that bisphenol S, a common substitute for BPA, altered zebrafish embryo physiology within 25 hours at trace levels like those in polluted river water, speeding embryonic development and disrupting the reproductive system.

Two Major Victories This Week - newsletter from fluoridealert.org
Fluoride Action Network reports two more communities have ended fluoridation: Parry Sound, Ontario, after more than six months of debate, and New Zealand's Whakatane District, covering 37,000 people. Councillors cited uncertainty about the health risks of the practice.

Advocates Back NTP Fluoride Review, Citing Risk To Developing Brain
The Fluoride Action Network says it gave the National Toxicology Program material arguing that high-dose animal studies are relevant to neurotoxic risk in fluoridated communities, and that the epidemiological evidence tying fluoride to childhood osteosarcoma is stronger than currently recognized.
