Researchers led by Darrel Francis weighed the heart risk added by a daily Quarter Pounder with cheese and a small milkshake against the risk cut by statins in trials of 42,848 patients, and found most statins offset the extra fat. They suggest a free statin served alongside the meal.

High cholesterol at young ages raises heart risk
Among 3,258 adults followed from ages 18 to 30 for two decades, 44 percent with average LDL above 160 mg/dL had coronary calcification 20 years later, against 9 percent of those under 70 mg/dL. The article quotes an observer questioning how strongly LDL drives the risk.

Popular Brew May Lower Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, and Triglycerides
Research cited here finds tea rehydrates as well as water rather than dehydrating, and links one to eight cups a day to lower chronic disease risk, credited to flavonoids. Mercola still wants most daily fluid to be pure water, with no added sugar or pasteurized milk.

Cholesterol, eggs raises heart risk in older people
Among 1,941 older adults followed nine years, dietary fat was not linked to cardiovascular events, but those in the top third for cholesterol intake had 47 percent higher risk, and people eating more than three eggs a week were 68 percent more likely to have a heart attack, coronary death or stroke.

FDA: Statin Zocor causes muscle injury
On March 19 the FDA told clinicians and patients that data from a large clinical trial link Zocor to muscle injury, with risk highest at the 80 mg dose and when the statin is combined with certain other drugs. Myopathy is a side effect of all statins, the agency said.

One in Five U.S. Teenagers Has High Cholesterol
A CDC study of more than 3,000 US teenagers found over 20 percent had elevated cholesterol, rising to nearly 43 percent among obese teens but still affecting more than 14 percent at normal weight. Mercola warns the finding will push more children toward statins, which he opposes.
Disease
20% US teens have abnormal lipid levels
A CDC analysis of NHANES data from 1999 to 2006 found 20.3% of youths aged 12 to 19 had at least one abnormal lipid level: 14.2% of normal weight, 22.3% of overweight and 42.9% of obese youths. About 32% had a high BMI and would qualify for screening under AAP guidelines.

Does High Cholesterol REALLY Cause Heart Disease?
Uffe Ravnskov says he never believed the cholesterol theory of atherosclerosis, calling the idea that slightly raised blood cholesterol kills as silly as claiming yellow fingers cause lung cancer. He recounts leaving academic nephrology after exposing a colleague's fraudulent paper.
