Over six months, 47 overweight adults drank a liter a day of regular cola, milk, diet cola or water. The cola group ended with far more liver, muscle and visceral fat and higher triglycerides and cholesterol than at baseline, while milk and diet cola lowered systolic blood pressure.

Cola may lower sperm counts
A Danish study of more than 2,500 young men found those drinking a quart or more of cola a day averaged 35 million sperm per mL against 50 million in non-drinkers. It was not a trial, and the researchers suggested lifestyle rather than caffeine may explain the difference.

Too much sugar-laced cola raises diabetes risk in pregnant women
Among 13,475 women in the Nurses' Health Study II, those drinking more than five servings of sugar-sweetened cola a week before pregnancy had a 22 percent higher risk of gestational diabetes than women drinking less than one a month. Other sugary and diet drinks showed no link.

Drinking too much cola may induce potassium deficiency
Greek researchers reviewed cases of people who drank 2 to 10 quarts of cola a day and developed potassium deficiency, with effects from fatigue and muscle weakness to paralysis; one man who drank 10 quarts daily suffered lung paralysis. They suspect caffeine and sugar are involved.

Excessive cola intake leads to muscle problems
A review in the International Journal of Clinical Practice links drinking 2 to 9 litres of cola a day to hypokalemia, with symptoms from mild muscle weakness to profound paralysis. Patients recovered once they stopped the cola and took potassium; caffeine looks like the main driver.
