CSPI's Michael Jacobson says the caramel colourings made by reacting sugars with ammonia or sulfites carry 2- and 4-methylimidazole, which animal studies link to lung, liver and thyroid tumours. The group has petitioned the FDA to ban them; UC Davis found 0.30 to 0.36 ug/ml in colas.
