The authors argue that chronic systemic inflammation links rheumatoid arthritis to cardiovascular disease, and that the marine omega-3 fats EPA and DHA may address both. At least 6 of 14 well-controlled trials found the supplements reduced joint inflammation.

Newborns benefit from Mom's DHA intake
In a double-blind trial in Mexico, women took 400 mg of DHA daily from mid-pregnancy to birth. At 1 month their infants had shorter cough, phlegm and wheezing, and at 3 months spent 14% less time sick, though rash lasted 22% longer.

Fish oil omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA may not be indispensable
A survey of 14,422 British adults, with plasma fatty acids measured in 4,902, found fish eaters took in 57 to 80 percent more omega-3 polyunsaturated fat than non-fish eaters, though the difference was small. The authors suggest enough plant-derived ALA may let the body make what it needs.

Fish oil DHA doesn't help Alzheimer's disease - What you need to know
In an 18-month JAMA trial, 2 grams of DHA daily did not slow decline in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's: cognitive scores shifted 8.27 points against 7.98 for placebo, and an MRI substudy showed no effect on brain volume.

Eating fish lowers risk of dying from prostate cancer
Reviewing 17 case-control and 14 cohort studies, Konrad Szymanski's team found no link between eating fish and getting prostate cancer, but heavy fish eaters were 44 percent less likely to develop metastatic disease and up to 63 percent less likely to die of it.

Pink News: Fish oil prevents breast cancer
Following 35,000 women aged 50 to 76, Fred Hutchinson researchers found current fish oil use accompanying 32 percent lower breast cancer risk. The drop showed only for ductal tumours; black cohosh, dong quai, soy and St. John's wort showed no link.

The cure for lung cancer may be in fish oil
A University of Nevada case report describes a 78-year-old man with terminal lung cancer who refused radiotherapy and chemotherapy, took 15 grams of DHA and EPA a day and avoided linoleic acid. His tumours shrank and disappeared, and he was alive five years later.

Omega-3 fatty acids don't cut risk of heart disease?
In 4,837 heart attack survivors aged 60 to 80, low doses of EPA and DHA or of ALA did not cut major cardiovascular events, researchers reported at the 2010 European Society of Cardiology Congress. Many variables were in play, so the trial does not settle the question.

New evidence explains why fish oil fights breast cancer
Texas researchers report that a fish oil diet raised levels of the tumour suppressor PTEN in breast tumours in a mouse xenograft model, offering a mechanism for earlier observations, among them a cohort in which regular fish oil users were 32% less likely to develop breast cancer.

Omega-3 fatty acids prevent breast cancer from spreading
DHA and EPA reduced the activity, though not the number, of CXCR4 receptors on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, limiting their migration, researchers reported in Molecular Cancer Research. They call it a possible benefit for patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Fish oil may reduce risk of breast cancer
Among 35,016 postmenopausal women followed six years, those who regularly used fish oil supplements were 32 percent less likely to develop breast cancer, particularly invasive ductal disease. The authors caution this is an association; a healthier lifestyle among users could explain it.

Can't get your wife pregnant? Eat tons of fatty fish!
Mice lacking the gene for an enzyme needed to make DHA, an omega-3 fat, produced very little high-quality sperm; what they made was round rather than elongated and could not move. Feeding those mice a DHA-fortified diet restored their fertility.

Omega 3 fatty acid helps healthy people, but not Alzheimer's patients
Two studies at an Alzheimer's Association conference pulled in opposite directions: DHA did not help 402 people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's, while another found the omega-3 improved memory in healthy older people over six months. Treatment may need to start earlier, the association says.
