In 12 people with hyperglycemia, six weeks of 300 mg thiamine daily lowered 2-hour plasma glucose from baseline and prevented the rises in fasting glucose and insulin seen on placebo. The authors say high-dose thiamine may slow progression toward diabetes.

Diabetes
High-Fat, High-Protein Diets Linked to Type 2 Diabetes
Following 66,485 women in the E3N-EPIC study for 14 years, researchers found those eating a meat-heavy, low-carbohydrate diet the authors called acidic had a 56 percent greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes than women eating a fruit- and vegetable-rich alkaline diet.
Diabetes
Food proteins help fight type 2 diabetes mellitus
A review in Proceedings of the Nutrition Society reports that peptides from milk protein inhibit DPP-IV, the enzyme that inactivates incretins, and help regulate blood sugar. The authors call food-derived inhibitors a possible approach to managing type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes
Eating walnuts may cut type 2 diabetes mellitus risk
Among roughly 138,000 women in the Nurses' Health Studies, those eating two or more servings of walnuts a week were 33 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Adjusting for body mass index weakened the reduction to 26 percent.
Diabetes
Psyllium helps fight type 2 diabetes mellitus
A Duke-led double-blind trial of 37 patients with type 2 diabetes found 3.4 g or 6.8 g of psyllium twice daily lowered fasting blood glucose against placebo at weeks 4, 8 and 12, and both doses lowered HbA1c by week 12, in people already on medication and a restricted diet.
Diabetes
Red meat boosts type 2 diabetes mellitus risk in men
Among 27,425 Japanese men followed five years, those eating the most total meat and the most red meat were 35 and 48 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. No link showed up in women, or for processed red meat and poultry in either sex.
Diabetes
Eating meat linked to type 2 diabetes
Following 340,234 people in eight European countries for nearly 12 years, EPIC researchers found each extra 50 grams of meat a day went with an 8 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes, rising to 12 percent for processed meat. The link was weaker in obese participants.
Diabetes
Diabetes risk lower in those with higher vitamin D
A Diabetes Care meta-analysis of 21 prospective studies covering 76,220 adults, led by Yiqing Song, found people with the highest serum vitamin D were 38 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Each 10 nmol/L increment corresponded to a 4 percent lower risk.
Diabetes
Fructose may cause type 2 diabetes mellitus?
In a small crossover trial of nine healthy young men published in Diabetes Care, moderate and high fructose intake and high sucrose intake lowered hepatic suppression of glucose production and raised LDL and total cholesterol compared with the same amount of glucose.
Diabetes
Dietary factors and type 2 diabetes mellitus
A roundup of recent diabetes nutrition research: high serum uric acid was tied to greater type 2 diabetes risk, nettle leaf extract lowered glucose and insulin, an alpha-lipoic acid diet prevented insulin resistance, and vegetables with PUFA-rich oil lowered HbA1c over eight weeks.
Diabetes
Vegetables, PUFA rich plant oil help diabetes mellitus
People with type 2 diabetes who ate 300 grams of vegetables and 25 mL of polyunsaturated plant oil daily for eight weeks raised their antioxidant levels and lowered both HbA1c and DNA strand breaks. A comparison group lowered HbA1c but saw no drop in oxidative DNA damage.
Diabetes
Curcumin supplements prevent type 2 diabetes
In a Thai trial, 240 people with prediabetes took six curcumin capsules or a placebo daily for nine months. None of the curcumin group developed type 2 diabetes, against 16% of the placebo group, and only the curcumin group lost weight.

How Diet Foods and Drinks Can Actually Cause, NOT Prevent Diabetes
Dr. Mercola cites a new mouse study reporting that aspartame alone raised fasting blood glucose and lowered insulin sensitivity, and that pairing it with MSG raised both weight and fasting glucose. He urges readers to drop diet foods containing the two additives.
Diabetes
Red meat linked to high risk of Type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a prospective study of 66,118 French women followed from 1993 to 2007, those eating five or more servings of processed meat a week ran a 30 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Unprocessed red meat showed no significant association.

Lifestyle
Weight loss helps prevent diabetes
In the Swedish Obese Subjects study, obese participants who cut their BMI by five units within two years had diabetes rates of 2.0 to 3.4 percent, against 6.5 to 9.3 percent among those whose weight held steady. Remission rates did not depend on how obese patients were to begin with.
Disease
Diabetes, overweight linked to high risk of breast cancer
A Uruguayan study of 367 breast cancer cases and 545 controls found women with a history of diabetes were 64 percent more likely to have the disease, rising to 92 percent after menopause. Postmenopausal women with diabetes, overweight and dyslipidemia were more than nine times as likely.
Supplements
These dietary supplements beat antidiabetic drug in treating diabetes
In rats made diabetic with streptozotocin, 21 days of Cordyceps sinensis, taurine or the two combined lowered serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and insulin resistance index more than the antidiabetic drug glibenclamide, per Food Chemistry and Toxicology.
