Researchers followed 135 Japanese adults for 10 to 15 years and examined their brains after death: Alzheimer's plaques appeared in 72 percent of those with insulin resistance versus 62 percent without. No link emerged with tangles, and the lead author says cause is unproven.

Researchers Study Cinnamon Extracts
Over 12 weeks, 22 obese volunteers with prediabetes took either 250 mg of a dried water-soluble cinnamon extract twice daily or a placebo. The extract improved several antioxidant measures by 13 to 23 percent, and that improvement tracked with falling fasting glucose.
Lifestyle
Physical activity, healthy diet cut type 2 diabetes risk
Women eating one and a half extra servings of green leafy vegetables a day had a 14% lower risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a BMJ review that cannot show cause. A separate Chinese cohort found high waist-to-hip ratio and low physical activity each raised risk sharply.
Diabetes
Green leafy vegetables cut diabetes mellitus (type 2) risk
Pooling six studies covering 220,000 adults, Leicester researchers found that eating an extra one and a half servings of green leafy vegetables a day was associated with 14 percent lower type 2 diabetes risk. Fruit and vegetables in general showed no clear benefit.
Obesity
Larger waistline linked with greater risk of premature death
Eric Jacobs and colleagues followed 48,500 men and 56,343 women aged 50 and over for six years. Waists above 47 inches in men and 42 inches in women carried roughly twice the risk of death, and the raised risk showed up in every body mass index category.
Diet
Plant-based diet effective in treating diabetes, PCRM says
PCRM says it sued the FDA for failing to act on its petition asking the agency to point diabetes patients toward dietary alternatives on Avandia's label. The group cites a 2006 NIH-funded study that found a low-fat plant-based diet matched oral drugs at lowering blood sugar and cholesterol.
Food
Fructose promotes growth of pancreatic cancer
UCLA researchers compared how pancreatic cancer cells in Petri dishes use glucose and fructose, and found the cells route fructose through the non-oxidative pentose phosphate pathway to build nucleic acids for division. Lead author Anthony Heaney calls refined sugar a hidden danger.

New Warning About Excessive “Agent Orange” Toxin in Baby Formula and Breast Milk
Dr. Mercola writes that as the EPA reviews a proposed safe exposure limit for dioxin, research indicates a nursing infant takes in 77 times that amount and adults 1,200 times. Dioxin is a byproduct of incineration, smelting, chlorine bleaching and pesticide making, and builds up in animal fat.

New Sensor Brings Fresh Hope to Diabetics
UC San Diego bioengineers and GlySens describe in Science Translational Medicine an implantable glucose sensor with wireless telemetry that kept recording in animals for more than a year. If human trials and FDA review follow, it could spare patients finger sticks.

Potential Indicators of Type 2 Diabetes Investigated
ARS physiologist Sean Adams is hunting early biomarkers of type 2 diabetes. In blood from diabetic and nondiabetic African-American volunteers, some fatty acylcarnitines ran almost 300 percent higher in the diabetic women, which he attributes to incomplete or inefficient fat oxidation.
Vitamins
This Vital Vitamin Reduces Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and Pre-eclampsia in Pregnancy by 30 Percent
British researchers writing in the British Journal of Nutrition made a "strong case" for advising pregnant women to take vitamin D, noting the UK was the only one of 31 countries not recommending it for women of reproductive age. Mercola urges testing 25-hydroxy D in pregnancy.
Drug
Both Avandia and Actos may raise fracture risk
Analyzing pharmacy and medical claims over 540 days, researchers found diabetes patients taking Avandia or Actos were 39 percent likelier to suffer a fracture than patients on neither drug, with comparable increases in men. The findings ran in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism.
Diabetes
Red meat linked to higher risk of diabetes
Across 75,512 adults in Hawaii followed a mean 14 years, men eating the most red meat were 43 percent more likely to develop diabetes and women 30 percent. For processed red meat the increases were 57 and 45 percent. Fresh poultry showed no link to diabetes risk.
Lifestyle
Avandia will stay on the market, but you don't have to take it
An FDA advisory panel voted 20 to 12 to keep Avandia on the market, though tougher label warnings may follow. The piece argues patients can ask for Actos instead, which cardiologist Steven Nissen and FDA reviewer David Graham say offers similar benefits far more safely.
Drug
FDA may not ban Avandia
FDA advisers meet July 13 and 14 to decide whether Avandia stays on the market. Agency reviewers disagree over the RECORD trial, with one calling it inadequately designed and saying the drug raises heart attack risk; cardiologist Steven Nissen will argue for withdrawal.
Drug
Could Diabetes drug Avandia escape this time?
Two FDA advisory committees met July 13 and 14 to weigh whether Avandia stays on the market. A Harvard meta-analysis of 42 studies covering 28,361 patients found death rates 15 percent higher and heart failure 13 percent higher than with Actos.
Vitamins
High Doses of vitamin D result in lower blood pressure
In a small trial, type 2 diabetes patients given a single 100,000 or 200,000 IU dose of vitamin D3 showed moderately lower systolic blood pressure at eight weeks than those on placebo. Endothelial function, insulin resistance and HbA1c did not differ between groups.
Diabetes
Avandia Coming Under Fire
Research in the Archives of Internal Medicine covering more than a quarter of a million Medicare patients found Avandia carried a 28 to 39 percent higher risk of major cardiovascular events, which researchers put at roughly one event per 60 patients treated for a year.
