In a Norwegian study of 27,763 mothers, those who were emotionally unstable, anxious, angry or low in self-confidence more often fed their 18-month-olds sweet and fatty foods. Daily smoking, high BMI and more children tracked the same way; older, better-educated mothers did not.

The truth about vegetarianism in young adults
A study from three universities found 15- to 23-year-olds following vegetarian diets were more likely than others to binge and purge or misuse diet pills and diuretics, though they were less often obese. The writer urges parents and clinicians to ask why a teen switches diets.

Doctors endorse vegan and vegetarian diets for healthy pregnancies
PCRM doctors and dietitians say well-planned vegan and vegetarian diets suit pregnancy and that B12 needs are met by fortified foods or a multivitamin. They respond to a Pediatrics study linking low B12 to neural tube defects in Irish women sampled from 1983 to 1990.

AHA responds to Israel diet/weight loss study
The American Heart Association says it no longer recommends the low-fat diet used in a widely reported Israeli weight loss study, having revised that 2000 guidance in 2006. Rather than capping total fat, it now urges avoiding trans and saturated fat and eating fruit, vegetables and fish.

Diet affects cardiovascular disease
A study in The Journal of Clinical Hypertension reports that eating more potassium, and possibly magnesium and calcium, may lower blood pressure and reduce coronary heart disease and stroke risk. Americans eat twice the recommended sodium and half the recommended potassium.

What can you eat to prevent prostate cancer
A roundup of earlier reports on diet and prostate cancer, among them a review of plant-based diets, trials of black tea and lycopene, and Japanese research finding men who drank five or more cups of green tea a day were 48% less likely to develop advanced disease.

Early life nutrition enhances intellectual capability in adulthood
Guatemalan children given the protein-rich supplement atole from birth to 24 months later scored higher as adults on reading comprehension and cognitive tests, a gain equal to about half a year of schooling and up to 1.2 years in girls. Published in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

Want to live a bit longer? Cut calorie intake!
In a one-year Saint Louis University trial, sedentary men and postmenopausal women who cut 300 to 500 calories a day ended up with lower levels of the thyroid hormone T3 than exercisers or controls, consistent with a theory that calorie restriction slows aging.

Nutrients better outcomes of tuberculosis treatment
In a study of 887 tuberculosis patients in Dar es Salaam, those given nutrient supplements were 45 percent less likely to see the disease recur and slightly less likely to fail treatment, with a stronger effect among HIV carriers. Supplements did not significantly change death rates.
