A NIEHS study, the first nationally representative sample of antinuclear antibodies, estimates more than 32 million Americans carry autoantibodies that target their own tissues. Frequency runs highest among women, older people and African-Americans, though ANA does not mean disease follows.

Rates of cancer deaths on the decline
The American Cancer Society's Cancer Statistics 2012 reports cancer death rates fell nearly 2 percent for both sexes over five years, driven by a 40 percent drop in male lung cancer deaths and a 34 percent drop in female breast cancer deaths.
Disease
Persons with dementia have higher rate of hospitalizations (PR)
Among 3,019 older adults in the Adult Changes in Thought study, those who developed dementia had significantly higher rates of hospital admission for all causes and for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions that better outpatient care might have prevented.
Disease
Gut hormone leads to weight loss in overweight or obese patients (PR)
University of Copenhagen researchers pooled 25 randomised trials covering more than 6,000 patients and found GLP-1 receptor agonists taken for at least 20 weeks produced greater weight loss than controls, plus lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Nausea and diarrhoea were common.
Disease
New Diabetes Patients Don't Have to Rush to Get Medications
University of Chicago researchers calculated that delaying blood pressure medication a year after a middle-aged diabetes diagnosis costs roughly two days of life expectancy, and a ten-year delay five months. They suggest spending year one on self-management and lifestyle changes.
Disease
Explaining heart failure as a cause of diabetes (PR)
Researchers reporting in Cell Metabolism trace a chain from heart failure to diabetes: heart failure stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, which switches on p53 in fat tissue, leading to inflammation, systemic insulin resistance and worsening heart function.
Disease
Cognitive decline may begin as early as 45
Tracking 7,390 public servants aged 45 to 70 over ten years, researchers found mental reasoning already declining by 3.6% among those aged 45-49, with steeper drops at 65-70. The authors say what is good for our hearts is also good for our heads.
Disease
Silent strokes linked to memory loss
A Neurology study of 658 dementia-free people aged 65 and over found the 174 with silent strokes had smaller hippocampi and scored worse on memory tests. The authors say the strokes and hippocampal volume were linked to memory loss separately, supporting stroke prevention.
Disease
Visceral fats may raise risk of Alzheimer's disease
Tufts researchers followed 840 volunteers averaging age 76 for about 13 years, during which 159 developed dementia, including 125 cases of Alzheimer's. They report that elevated adiponectin, a hormone from visceral fat, was associated with increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's in women.
Disease
How Women May Be Contributing to Men's Rising Cancer Rates
An analysis of data from 100 countries linked oral contraceptive use to prostate cancer, possibly through synthetic estrogens that women excrete and that reach drinking water. Mercola argues estrogen, rather than testosterone, may be the likelier culprit.
Disease
Chinese man dies from bird flu
A 39-year-old bus driver in Shenzhen died of multiple organ failure and tested positive for H5N1, state media reported. He had not left the city or had contact with poultry in the prior month, and 120 people who had contact with him showed no signs of illness.
Disease
Sleep disorder linked to behavior problems in young diabetics
A study in Sleep of 50 children with type 1 diabetes aged 10 to 16 found they spent more time in lighter sleep than healthy peers, and about a third had sleep apnea with significantly higher blood sugar. The lead researcher says sleep problems may hinder blood sugar control.
Disease
Type 2 diabetes mellitus boosts risk of pancreatic cancer
A review in Molecular Carcinogenesis by MD Anderson's Donghui Li reports that people with type 2 diabetes face a 50 to 100 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer, argues the evidence points to cause rather than mere association, and notes metformin use lowers the risk.
Disease
Obesity, diabetes boost death risk from colorectal cancer
Two Journal of Clinical Oncology studies found people who were overweight or had type 2 diabetes when diagnosed with colorectal cancer fared worse. In the first, of 2,303 patients, being overweight at the outset carried a 30 percent higher risk of death from any cause and 35 percent from the cancer.
Disease
Overweight, Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Linked to Breast Cancer Risk
Obese postmenopausal women were twice as likely as lean women to develop breast cancer and overweight women 50% more likely, while postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes were 15 to 20% more likely. No link appeared for premenopausal breast cancer.
Disease
The Worst Possible Thing to Ignore if You Have Arthritis
A diet rich in omega-3 fats may help prevent osteoarthritis and slow it, Mercola writes, citing an animal study that found benefit in cartilage and the bone beneath it. He points to the anti-inflammatory compounds resolvins and protectins, and to krill oil research.
Disease
Weight loss helps type 2 diabetes people to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease
Rena Wing of Brown and colleagues studied 5,145 people with type 2 diabetes and found those who lost 5 to 10 percent of their weight in a year were markedly more likely to improve HbA1c, blood pressure, triglycerides and HDL. Weight loss showed no link to lower LDL cholesterol.
Disease
Child-mother relationship affects risk of childhood obesity
Researchers observed 977 mothers interacting with their children at 15, 24 and 36 months, then checked the children's weight at age 15. Teens who had the poorest early relationships with their mothers were 2.45 times as likely to be obese as those with the best.
