Infant mortality for 2006 in the U.S.
CDC data for 2006 show infant mortality highest at the extremes of maternal age: 16.7 deaths per 1,000 live single births to mothers under 15, roughly triple the rates for mothers aged 25 to 39, and 11.46 for mothers 45 and older, about double the lowest-risk groups.

Mortality Among Patients with Tuberculosis and Associations with HIV Status
U.S. data on culture-positive tuberculosis patients show deaths during treatment fell from 18 percent in 1993 to 9 percent in 2006. Among patients with both TB and HIV, the share dying dropped from 41 percent to 20 percent over the same period.

Cancers Diagnosed at Late-Stages Despite Available Screening Tests
A CDC report finds almost half of colorectal and cervical cancer cases and a third of breast cancer cases in the U.S. were diagnosed at late stages in 2004-2006, with rates differing by age, race and state. The authors say differing screening rates may partly explain the gap.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
The CDC counts COPD - emphysema, chronic bronchitis and in some cases asthma - as the fourth leading cause of US death, killing more than 120,000 Americans a year, and urges those at risk to learn the symptoms, ask for a spirometry test, quit smoking and avoid lung irritants.

Trying to Manage Heart Disease Through Physical Activity?
A CDC study found 57 percent of adults with heart disease also have arthritis, and 29 percent of those with both are physically inactive, against 21 percent with heart disease alone. Joint-friendly activity such as walking, swimming or biking may help them manage both conditions.

Epilepsy Self-Management Tools
New CDC Managing Epilepsy Well Network studies in Epilepsy & Behavior report that UPLIFT, a phone and Internet depression treatment, significantly reduced depressive symptoms in adults with epilepsy, and that PEARLS eased them through eight home visits.

Rates of New Lung Cancer Cases in the US
In 2006, doctors told 106,374 U.S. men and 90,080 women they had lung cancer — 82.7 and 55.0 cases per 100,000. Smoking is blamed for about 90 percent of cases in men and nearly 80 percent in women. Black men had the highest incidence, white women the most new cases.

Managing Diabetes During the Holidays
Advice for holiday gatherings with diabetes: eat a snack beforehand, ask what will be served, bring a dish you can eat, take smaller portions, move away from the buffet, choose low-calorie drinks, limit alcohol to one drink with a meal, and skip honey glazes, gravies and salty prepared sides.

National Overview of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), 2009
CDC recorded 1,244,180 chlamydia cases in 2009, the largest number ever reported for any condition, a rate of 409.2 per 100,000 and up 2.8 percent from 2008. The rate among women ran nearly three times that among men, reflecting how many women are screened.

Ed early sign of heart disease in diabetics?
Among more than 6,000 men aged 55 to 88 with type 2 diabetes followed for five years, those with erectile dysfunction at baseline were 19 percent more likely to have a heart attack, 35 percent more likely to develop heart disease and 36 percent more likely to have a stroke.

Haiti's health ministry and CDC traced a surge of acute watery diarrhea to Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa. By November 13 the ministry had reported 16,111 hospitalizations and 992 cholera deaths across seven of Haiti's 10 departments and Port-au-Prince.

Insulin-like growth factor-I may boost death risk in older men
Following 633 older men for 18 years, researchers linked higher serum IGF-I to greater cancer mortality, independent of age, adiposity, lifestyle and cancer history. They urge caution about therapies that raise IGF-I to counter aging.

A Simple, Inexpensive Trick to Cure a Cold
Mercola notes Americans catch more than a billion colds a year, that colds come from viruses so antibiotics are useless against them, and that hand-to-hand contact spreads them more than coughing. He argues an impaired immune system is what turns exposure into illness.
Disease
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
November marks a national campaign on lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in US men and women. Nearly 200,000 people are diagnosed each year and more than 90,000 die. Smoking causes 80 to 90 percent of cases; radon and asbestos are also listed as risks.

Merck's Vytorin cuts heart risk moderately
In an Oxford-led trial of about 9,000 people with chronic kidney disease, 15% taking Vytorin had a heart attack or stroke versus 18% on placebo. Because the trial never tested simvastatin alone, Cleveland Clinic's Steven Nissen says it reveals nothing about whether adding Zetia helps.
