A CDC factsheet on Balamuthia mandrillaris, a soil-dwelling amoeba behind roughly 200 known cases worldwide of a usually fatal brain infection. CDC identified two clusters of transplant-transmitted cases during 2009-2010, each involving four organ recipients.

Gene variant linked to aggressive Alzheimer's disease
Washington University researchers examined single DNA variations in 846 patients and reported in PLoS Genetics a variant tied to elevated tau in cerebrospinal fluid that tracked with faster Alzheimer's progression. Lead author Carlos Cruchaga says it held across three international studies.

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month
Sickle cell disease affects an estimated 70,000 to 100,000 Americans, including 1 in 500 African-American newborns, and more than 2 million people carry the gene. Patients are advised to get regular checkups, prevent infections and drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily.

"Inside Knowledge" About Gynecologic Cancer
CDC's Inside Knowledge campaign released a brochure, fact sheets, a symptoms diary, posters and radio and television announcements covering the five main gynecologic cancers: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal and vulvar. Each has its own signs, risk factors and prevention strategies.
Disease
Are You At Risk for Deep Vein Thrombosis?
Estimates suggest 350,000 to 600,000 Americans have a deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism each year and at least 100,000 die. About half of people with a DVT have no symptoms. Surgery, immobility, injury, estrogen, chronic illness, age, obesity and smoking all raise the risk.
Disease
Swine flu milder than seasonal flu, vitamin D helps prevent both
A JAMA study of 6,874 Wisconsin patients found 2009 pandemic H1N1 was not associated with more hospital admissions or pneumonia than recent seasonal flu strains. The article also points to a study suggesting vitamin D may beat influenza vaccine at preventing flu.
Disease
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are 100% Preventable
A CDC explainer on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: they are caused by drinking during pregnancy and are entirely preventable. No amount, timing or type of alcohol is known to be safe, and effects can include facial differences, small head size, low weight and poor coordination.
Disease
If You Have High Levels of This - You Have a 65% Higher Risk of Alzheimer's
Mercola cites a study of 135 elderly people followed 10 to 15 years whose autopsies found brain plaques in 72 percent of those with insulin resistance and 62 percent of those without, with the researchers suggesting insulin resistance may accelerate plaque development.
Disease
Ovarian Cancer Rates
Ovarian cancer accounts for about 3% of cancers in women but causes more deaths than any other gynecologic cancer. About 90% of cases occur after age 40, and 19,994 U.S. women were diagnosed in 2006. White women had the highest incidence and the highest death rate.
Disease
Why Do These Drugs Fail Miserably at Heart Attack Prevention?
Dr. Mercola rounds up 2010 reports questioning statins for primary prevention: researchers found no drop in death rates among people taking them to prevent a first heart attack, and other articles cast doubt on the JUPITER trial, funded by Crestor's maker.
Disease
Diabetes: 1 in 4 Chance this Disease is the Cause of Your Fatigue or Irritability
Mercola writes that one in four Americans has diabetes or pre-diabetes, 24 million diagnosed plus 57 million with impaired fasting glucose, and argues type 2 diabetes is preventable and usually reversible through lifestyle changes that restore insulin and leptin sensitivity.
Disease
Could This be the Key Factor Spiking the Rise in ADHD?
A Journal of Health Economics study concluded that roughly 20 percent of ADHD diagnoses, close to a million U.S. children, may be mistaken, catching the youngest and least mature children in a grade. Those children are more likely to be prescribed stimulants.
Disease
Breast Cancer Awareness
A question-and-answer page on breast cancer: it ranks fifth among causes of death for women, behind heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and lung diseases. In 2006, 191,410 women were diagnosed and 40,820 died. It lists symptoms and mammogram guidance.
Disease
Meningitis: Help Prevent It
The meningococcal conjugate vaccine is recommended for all 11- to 18-year-olds. The U.S. records about 1,000 to 1,200 cases a year; even with antibiotics 10-15% of patients die, and roughly 15% of survivors are left with lasting disability.
Disease
Is it ADHD?
ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with it struggle to pay attention and control impulses. No single test diagnoses it; doctors rule out other causes and gather histories from parents, teachers and the child.
Disease
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Disease: The Congenital Disease Mothers Don't Know About
CMV is the most common congenital viral infection in the U.S., leaving about 5,500 children a year with disabilities -- more than Down syndrome or spina bifida. About a third of first infections in pregnancy reach the fetus, yet one survey found only 22 percent of U.S. women had heard of it.
Disease
Arthritis Patients Benefit from Weight Training
A study of 28 rheumatoid arthritis patients found that 24 weeks of high-intensity weight training improved physical function such as walking by 20 to 30 percent and raised strength by nearly 120 percent. The disease also erodes muscle mass, not just joints.
Disease
Vitamin D may help reduce deaths from the Spanish flu pandemic
The CDC said in MMWR that it had overestimated annual flu deaths, putting the real toll at about two-thirds of the 33,000 figure it often cites. The piece also notes a Dermatoendocrinology paper linking solar UVB doses to lower case-fatality rates in the 1918-19 pandemic.
