What is Tay-Sachs disease?
Tay-Sachs disease lets the fatty substance GM2 ganglioside build up in brain nerve cells because the enzyme beta-hexosaminidase A is deficient. Babies seem well at first, then lose mental and physical abilities. A blood test diagnoses it, and no treatment exists.

8 Diseases You Didn't Know You Had
Martha Rosenberg argues drugmakers invent conditions to fit new products. She points to bisphosphonates sold for osteopenia now linked to jaw bone death, esophageal cancer and the fractures they were meant to prevent, and to SERMs such as Evista and tamoxifen taking their place.

It's Spring–Time to Prevent Lyme Disease
CDC's spring reminder on tick bites: the US recorded almost 29,000 confirmed and 6,277 probable Lyme disease cases in 2008, most in the Northeast and upper Midwest. Blacklegged ticks spread it, and larvae and nymphs are small enough to be hard to see.

Chemo Reduces Breast Density
Among 54 breast cancer patients imaged by MRI at UC Irvine, breast density fell 10% after AC chemotherapy and 12.7% after AC plus taxane, with bigger drops in younger patients and after more cycles. Whether that lowers risk in the other breast is unknown.

Worst hay fever season is here
An allergist tells NPR that sky-high pollen counts have made this one of the worst hay fever seasons in years. The piece runs through antihistamines, decongestants now logged behind the pharmacy counter, and steroid nasal sprays, noting most only treat symptoms.

Breast cancer News: Breast density and EGFR may predict risk
Mayo Clinic researchers tracking 19,924 cancer-free women found that a drop in breast density between mammograms taken about six years apart was tied to 28% lower breast cancer risk than in women whose density did not change.

Breast Cancer News: Body Size, Mutations and Survival
A Breast Cancer Research study of 2,800 Swedish breast cancer patients and 3,100 women without it found a large body type at age seven was associated with lower risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. A second item reports U.K. five-year breast cancer survival rose by 1.3 percent.

CDC: Swine flu activity low, but persistent
CDC's update covering August 30, 2009 through March 27, 2010 reports 2009 H1N1 stayed dominant. Of 422,648 specimens tested, 21.1% were positive, and 99.4% of subtyped influenza A viruses were 2009 H1N1. Activity peaked in late October, then declined.

CDC study: 1 in 110 children have autism
CDC's ADDM Network data from 2006 put autism spectrum disorder prevalence at about 1 in 110 eight-year-olds, ranging from 1 in 80 to 1 in 240 by community. All ten communities studied in both 2002 and 2006 saw increases, averaging 57%, and ASD was 4 to 5 times more common in boys.

At Least Two Thirds of Breast Cancer Cases are Likely Avoidable
Researchers at a European breast cancer conference estimated up to a third of Western breast cancer cases could be avoided if women ate less and exercised more, since fat tissue makes estrogen. Mercola calls that estimate far too low and puts the avoidable share at two-thirds or more.
Disease
Doctors want more people to be diagosed with eating disorders
Doctors at Stanford and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital argue in Pediatrics that the diagnostic cutoffs for anorexia and bulimia are too strict, leaving out many severely ill people, and should be widened so more patients can be diagnosed.
