Purdue researchers found E. coli O157:H7 in mung bean sprout tissue and Salmonella in peanut seedlings after the seeds were contaminated before planting, with pathogens in every major tissue. That suggests sanitizing the outside of produce may not remove them.

E coli outbreak linked to cheese sold at Costco - CDC
The CDC ties 25 E. coli O157:H7 infections across Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada to Bravo Farms Dutch Style Gouda, sampled and sold at Costco from October 5 to November 1. The agency tells anyone holding the cheese to return or discard it, and expects more cases to surface.

Foodborne illness: What you need to know
The CDC counted 1,097 outbreaks in 2007, causing 21,244 illnesses and 18 deaths, with poultry (17%), beef (16%) and leafy vegetables (14%) the leading sources. The piece then lists common pathogens, their symptoms, incubation times and food sources, drawing on an FDA report.

One Million Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled Due to Escherichia Coli
Valley Meat Company of Modesto is recalling about a million pounds of frozen ground beef patties and bulk ground beef over possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination, after California health officials linked the patties to a small cluster of at least six illnesses.

CDC: E coli poisoning cases down in 2009
CDC figures for 2009 record 17,468 lab-confirmed foodborne infections, led by salmonella with 7,039 cases and campylobacter with 6,033; E coli accounted for 459. Infections from E coli O157, salmonella, listeria and campylobacter kept declining against the 1996-1998 baseline.

E coli kills young boy in Washington State
A 4-year-old boy died and three other children were hospitalized after E. coli O157:H7 spread at a licensed home day care in Clark County, Washington. Six of 26 others tested positive without symptoms, the center is closed, and officials have not identified the source.

Understand e coli
The CDC estimates 73,000 infections and 61 deaths a year in the U.S. from E. coli O157:H7. Cattle are the main source, and the Shiga toxin these strains produce can damage the lining of the intestines and kidneys, often causing bloody diarrhea and sometimes kidney failure in young children.

E coli outbreak leads to beef recall
Fairbank Farms recalled 545,699 pounds of ground beef after its products were suspected as the source of an E. coli outbreak that sickened 28 people and killed two. The recalled beef went to Trader Joe's, Giant, Price Chopper, Wild Harvest and Shaw's in eight states.

E. coli found in Nestle cookie dough
The FDA said it found E. coli O157:H7 in a sample of prepackaged Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough from the Danville, Va. plant, but had not determined whether that strain caused the outbreak, which had sickened 69 people in 29 states and hospitalized 34.

Beef recall and E. coli poisoning
JBS Swift has expanded its June 24 recall to 380,000 pounds of beef primal products over possible E. coli O157:H7, up from 41,280 pounds. A spokesman said no illnesses were reported; a food safety attorney cites a CDC inquiry into 24 illnesses, at least 18 apparently linked.
