An Environmental Working Group study found nearly 40 percent of thermal paper receipts tested carried high levels of bisphenol A, which no visual check detects, and that sweaty hands lift some of it off. The National Toxicology Program has voiced concern about BPA and children's brains.

Household appliances linked to breast cancer
An In Vivo study drew on 1,290 Israeli women aged 60 and older and found significantly more epithelial mammary tumors among those followed from 1991 to 2003, who used EMF-generating appliances heavily, than in the 1978-1990 group, who rarely did.

How to Avoid Becoming a Bug Buffet this Summer
Mercola offers ways to keep summer insects off without toxic chemicals, alongside mosquito facts: the insects feed on plant nectar, females take blood only to nourish eggs, they sense carbon dioxide and body heat from 25 to 35 meters, and a full moon raised activity 500% in one study.

The Reckless Self-Interest of the Fragrance Industry
The Cancer Prevention Coalition warns that fragrance ingredients linked to cancer and to fetal, hormonal or reproductive toxicity go unregulated, with FDA not using its 1938 authority over cosmetics and EPA not acting on cleaning products. Industry keeps ingredients trade secrets.

EWG Newsletter July 21 - Everything We Do
EWG's mid-year newsletter recaps the 2010 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides, a relaunched farm subsidy database and a sunscreen guide with an iPhone app. Ken Cook also describes Senate testimony questioning BP's release of 1.8 million gallons of oil dispersants into the Gulf.
Environment
Household cleaning products linked to breast cancer
A case-control study in Environmental Health found women who used household cleaning products most often were 110 percent more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, and frequent air freshener users 90 percent more likely. Pesticides showed no link, and the data were self-reported.

Villages in India Show the U.S. Just How Dangerous Fluoride in Our Water Is…
Reports from India: about 135 of some 200 villagers in Gaudiyan have bone deformities a doctor attributes to skeletal fluorosis, two-thirds of people in Sogival, where groundwater holds 4.84 ppm fluoride, have skeletal deformities, and children elsewhere have developed cataracts.

Organic Pesticides Not Always Best Choice
A PLoS ONE study of soybean crops found an organic mineral oil pesticide killed ladybugs and flower bugs that keep aphids in check, which led researchers to rate it worse environmentally than synthetic versions. Mercola disputes that conclusion and calls for integrated pest management.

What is Gulf Coast Assistance Day?
An IRS notice on Gulf Coast Assistance Day, July 17, 2010, when seven Taxpayer Assistance Centers in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi opened to help people hit by the Deepwater Horizon spill. BP payments for lost income are taxable like the wages they replace.

Deadly and Dangerous Shampoos, Toothpastes, and Detergents: Could 16,000 Studies Be Wrong?
Mercola argues shampoos, cosmetics and detergents deserve the label scrutiny people now give food, citing a 2004 study of more than 10,000 ingredients which found the average adult uses nine personal care products a day containing 126 different chemicals.

Keep Your Cool in Hot Weather
Heat exposure caused 8,015 US deaths from 1979 to 2003. High humidity slows sweat from evaporating, and age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness and some medications affect how well a body cools. Air conditioning is the top protective factor; public cooled spaces help too.

Flame Retardant Causes Altered Thyroid Hormone Levels
Pregnant women with higher blood levels of PBDE flame retardants showed altered thyroid hormone levels, researchers report. A 10-fold increase in each PBDE chemical was associated with TSH decreases of 10.9 to 18.7 percent. California's flammability laws leave residents heavily exposed.

Understand air quality index
New York State issued an air quality alert as its index hit 100, advising people to skip strenuous outdoor exercise. EPA builds the index from five Clean Air Act pollutants and sorts it into six health categories; the agency has said indoor air can be 10 times worse than outdoor.

This Single Cell Plant Actually Expels Mercury from Your Body…
Mice fed methylmercury and then given chlorella excreted roughly twice as much mercury in urine and feces as untreated mice, a Journal of Toxicological Sciences study reports. The authors say longer experiments are needed to see effects on tissue accumulation.

City Passes First Cell Phone Radiation Law
San Francisco became the first US city to make retailers post each phone's specific absorption rate beside it in at least 11-point type. SAR values were already in manuals and FCC databases; the law makes them easy to compare. Mercola welcomes the change.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: Facts versus Fairytales
Mercola turns to personal care products, citing a 2004 study that evaluated more than 10,000 ingredients across 2,300 participants: the average adult uses nine products a day carrying 126 different chemicals, and over 250,000 women use about 15 products daily.

Is Your Shampoo Polluting the Water Supply?
Laboratory research found that shampoo, dishwashing detergent and laundry detergent mixed with chloramine formed NDMA, a suspected cancer-causing water contaminant. Quaternary amines are used in quantities large enough that some may persist in sewage treatment effluent.

FAN Bulletin 2018: Mercola-Connett Interview; and the US EPA
The Fluoride Action Network releases a five-part video interview with Joe Mercola, who plans to make ending water fluoridation a priority, and faults the EPA for publishing nothing in over four years toward a new drinking-water fluoride standard.
