FDA and CDC recommend pasteurization for all milk consumed in the United States, since heating kills salmonella, E. coli and listeria while altering only a few vitamins insignificantly. FDA rejects the claim that raw milk and its cheeses and yogurts are more nutritious.

US Senate Passes The Food Safety Modernization Act: Importers Beware!
The Senate passed the Food Safety Modernization Act 73 to 25. Former FDA official Benjamin England warns the bill greatly expands FDA authority over food, and predicts higher prices, slower imports and a heavier compliance burden without a proportional gain in safety.

The War Over Raw Milk Heats Up
Raw milk drinkers and sellers sued the FDA in early 2010, calling its ban on interstate sales unconstitutional, and the case is pending as raids on small dairies and buying clubs continue. Mercola argues the enforcement is out of proportion to the illnesses raw milk causes.

Plant-based diet effective in treating diabetes, PCRM says
PCRM says it sued the FDA for failing to act on its petition asking the agency to point diabetes patients toward dietary alternatives on Avandia's label. The group cites a 2006 NIH-funded study that found a low-fat plant-based diet matched oral drugs at lowering blood sugar and cholesterol.

FDA Okays generic enoxaparin sodium injection
On July 23 the FDA approved the first generic version of Lovenox, enoxaparin sodium injection, an anticoagulant used to prevent deep vein thrombosis. Approval went to Sandoz, over a citizen petition from Sanofi-Aventis asking the agency to withhold it.

FDA Orders Glaxo to Stop an Avandia Trial
The FDA told GlaxoSmithKline on July 20 to stop enrolling new patients in a trial of the diabetes drug Avandia, while letting the study continue. Public Citizen's Sidney Wolfe called that going only halfway; an FDA advisory panel had voted 20 to 12 to keep the drug on the market.
