A meta-analysis in the Archives of Internal Medicine pooled 14 studies covering 20,485 patients with a history of heart problems and found fish oil supplements did not prevent recurrence. The authors say the evidence fails to support their widespread use by heart patients.

The Antioxidant that Makes Fish Oil Work Better
A new study found that adding astaxanthin to fish oil makes the oil less prone to oxidation and strengthens its immunomodulatory properties. Mercola argues many fish oils on sale are already rancid and recommends krill oil, which contains astaxanthin naturally.

Why You Should Consider Stopping Fish Oil Now
In rats, 2.5% krill oil cut liver triglycerides more than the same amount of fish oil, and both suppressed fat-metabolising enzymes in the liver. The study's authors do not know why krill oil had the stronger effect; Mercola reads the rat data as a reason to prefer it.

Fish oil may reduce sudden cardiac death risk
Among 12 patients at high risk of sudden cardiac death, six weeks of 3 grams of fish oil a day left 42 percent with no inducible ventricular tachycardia, against 7 percent of 15 controls - a result the researchers read as an anti-arrhythmic effect.

Fish oil omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA may not be indispensable
A survey of 14,422 British adults, with plasma fatty acids measured in 4,902, found fish eaters took in 57 to 80 percent more omega-3 polyunsaturated fat than non-fish eaters, though the difference was small. The authors suggest enough plant-derived ALA may let the body make what it needs.

Fish oil DHA doesn't help Alzheimer's disease - What you need to know
In an 18-month JAMA trial, 2 grams of DHA daily did not slow decline in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's: cognitive scores shifted 8.27 points against 7.98 for placebo, and an MRI substudy showed no effect on brain volume.

When Never EVER to Use Fish Oil (video)
Drug industry insider Rudi Moerck argues in a video interview with Dr. Mercola that fish oil may not be the best source of omega-3 fats, while Mercola notes that most research on the benefits of EPA and DHA still rests on fish oil studies.

Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent breast cancer - study
Among 72,571 cancer-free women in the Shanghai Women's Health Study followed about eight years, those eating little marine omega-3 fat alongside a lot of omega-6 fat were twice as likely to develop breast cancer as women with high marine omega-3 intake.

Pink News: Fish oil prevents breast cancer
Following 35,000 women aged 50 to 76, Fred Hutchinson researchers found current fish oil use accompanying 32 percent lower breast cancer risk. The drop showed only for ductal tumours; black cohosh, dong quai, soy and St. John's wort showed no link.

The cure for lung cancer may be in fish oil
A University of Nevada case report describes a 78-year-old man with terminal lung cancer who refused radiotherapy and chemotherapy, took 15 grams of DHA and EPA a day and avoided linoleic acid. His tumours shrank and disappeared, and he was alive five years later.

VA Allows Some Veterans to Use Medical Marijuana
The Department of Veterans Affairs will let veterans in the 14 states where medical marijuana is legal use it for pain without automatically losing prescription painkillers. Doctors may still refuse, and veterans in other states are not covered. Alternative pain relievers follow.

Fish Oil, not Avastin, Fights Breast Cancer
An FDA advisory panel voted 12 to 1 to drop Avastin's breast cancer indication after follow-up studies failed to repeat its tumor-shrinking result. Separately, a lab study found omega-3 fatty acids downregulated a cancer-linked gene in breast cancer cells.

New evidence explains why fish oil fights breast cancer
Texas researchers report that a fish oil diet raised levels of the tumour suppressor PTEN in breast tumours in a mouse xenograft model, offering a mechanism for earlier observations, among them a cohort in which regular fish oil users were 32% less likely to develop breast cancer.

Omega-3 fatty acids prevent breast cancer from spreading
DHA and EPA reduced the activity, though not the number, of CXCR4 receptors on MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells, limiting their migration, researchers reported in Molecular Cancer Research. They call it a possible benefit for patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Fish oil may help autism
In a small Israeli trial, ten children with autism spectrum disorder took one gram of omega-3 fatty acids daily for 12 weeks, and eight of nine improved by 33 percent. The authors call the supplements safe and possibly helpful.

Fish oil good for mental health - studies
In a 12-week trial of 81 young people at very high risk of psychosis, 4.9 percent of those given 1.2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids daily developed a psychotic disorder, against 27.5 percent on placebo. Researchers put the number needed to treat at four.
Diet
Fish oil helps prevent breast cancer
In rats, a maternal diet high in omega-6 fat raised carcinogen-induced breast cancer risk in female offspring, and adding fish oil during pregnancy and lactation lowered it. Fish oil given at puberty or in adulthood did not reduce the risk.
