In the Shanghai Women's Health Study, premenopausal women in the top quintile of folate intake were 48 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than those in the lowest. The highest niacin intake, by contrast, matched a 62 percent higher risk of ER+/PR+ disease.

Eating Beans, Vegetables May Cut Risk of Coronary Heart Disease
A meta-analysis of 15 studies tied the highest dietary folate intakes to 31% lower coronary heart disease risk, each extra 200 micrograms a day to 12% lower risk, and the highest blood folate levels to 26% lower risk. The authors note the observational data cannot prove cause.

Prenatal lipotropes cut risk of breast cancer in offspring
Female rats whose mothers got methyl nutrients - methionine, choline, folate and vitamin B12 - before and after birth had fewer tumors, smaller tumor volume and longer survival after exposure to a carcinogen. The same nutrients slowed human breast cancer cells in culture.

Pregnant women's diet linked to risk of breast cancer in their daughters
Two mouse trials presented at the Era of Hope conference found daughters of mothers fed omega-3-rich canola oil in pregnancy had gene expression profiles tied to lower breast cancer risk, and daughters of mothers given methionine, choline, folate and B12 grew fewer, slower tumors.

Folate supplements cut colorectal cancer risk?
Among 99,523 adults in Cancer Prevention Study II, those with the highest total folate intake were 19 percent less likely to develop colorectal cancer, a significant result. Natural folate and folic acid taken separately showed 14 and 16 percent reductions that were not significant.

Folate: What You Need to Know
Isaac Eliaz explains that folate is the natural form found in leafy greens, legumes, bananas and eggs while folic acid is synthetic, and that the US Public Health Service advises 400 mcg a day for women of childbearing age because deficiency is linked to neural tube defects.

Too much folate may boost breast cancer risk - study
Among 70,656 postmenopausal women followed from 1992, 3,898 developed breast cancer, and those in the highest quintile of dietary folate intake had a 12% higher risk. The authors saw no dose-response trend, and found no link for vitamin B-6, B-12 or total folate.

B vitamins prevent dementia
In an Oxford trial, 168 volunteers with mild cognitive impairment took high-dose B12, folate and B6 for two years; brain shrinkage averaged 0.76 percent a year against 1.08 percent on placebo. Researchers did not test cognition, and a Dutch trial using lower doses found no benefit.

Higher folates, not antioxidants, can reduce hearing loss risk in men*
Men over 60 who ate and supplemented the most folate were 20 percent less likely to develop hearing loss, according to research presented at the 2009 AAO-HNSF meeting. Intake of antioxidant vitamins C and E and beta carotene showed no such link.

Dietary folate does not reduce risk of pancreatic cancer
Following 120,852 Dutch adults for 13.3 years, researchers found those with the highest dietary folate intake ran a 37 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those with the lowest, and found no link for individual folate vitamers.
