Green tea prevents type 2 diabetes mellitus
Pooling data on 340,234 people in the EPIC-InterAct study, researchers found those drinking at least four cups of tea a day were 16% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-drinkers, and lighter drinkers 7% less likely.

High fructose corn syrup can lead to vascular dysfunction, resveratrol offsets that effect
In rats, drinks made with high fructose corn syrup raised serum triglycerides, VLDL, insulin and blood pressure, pointing to vascular dysfunction, according to a study in Food Chemistry and Toxicology. Resveratrol, found in red grapes and red wine, offset those effects.

Butter flavor can raise risk of deadly bronchiolitis obliterans
Four young non-smoking men at a Brazilian cookie factory developed bronchiolitis obliterans after one to three years of unprotected exposure to artificial butter flavouring. All had persistent airflow obstruction; one diagnosis was confirmed by surgical lung biopsy.

Nutritious Food Demonized by the Stanford Study - Don't Be Fooled
UK organic sales have fallen since 2008 while Fairtrade has grown, which the Guardian attributes to shoppers now weighing seasonality, locality and animal welfare separately. Mercola argues locally grown food can be the better choice over imported organic.

Teas reduce adverse effects induced by fructose
Over 12 weeks, male Wistar rats on a fructose-rich diet developed raised serum triacylglycerols, cholesterol, insulin and leptin. Green, black and pu-erh tea leaves largely reversed the changes, while oolong tea failed to normalize cholesterol and insulin.

Mounting Evidence Suggests Coffee May Actually Have Therapeutic Health Benefits
Dr. Mercola says he has changed his advice on coffee: study after study has failed to show that moderate drinking raises the risk of cardiovascular or other serious disease, and an April 2012 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition paper again links it to lower type 2 diabetes risk.

Sesame seed cake helps prevent obesity
Rats on a high-fructose diet for a month became obese and hyperglycemic, but rats also fed sesame seed cake gained less weight, normalized their blood pressure, lowered serum cholesterol and improved glucose tolerance. The authors propose it as a strategy against diet-induced obesity.

Citric fruits may help prevent ischemic stroke
Among 69,622 women in the Nurses' Health Study followed 14 years, those in the highest quintile of flavanone intake were 19% less likely to have an ischemic stroke, and top citrus fruit and juice consumers 10% less likely. The study was observational and cannot show cause.

Olive oil does your body good
Studies published between 2003 and 2009 linked olive oil and Mediterranean-style eating to lower heart disease risk and inflammation, lower liver triglycerides, and better insulin and blood sugar control. The piece credits olive oil's 70-80% oleic acid content for its blood pressure effect.

Animal fat linked to high risk for ovarian cancer
In the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, 695 ovarian cancers appeared over about nine years. Women in the top fifth for animal fat intake were 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed than those in the bottom fifth; fats from plant sources showed no such link.
