Stanford researchers report in Science Translational Medicine that they found a compound that blocks cancer cells from taking up glucose. They tested it against renal cell carcinoma, a kidney cancer that resists standard chemotherapy and usually carries a mutation absent from normal tissue.

Cancer's Favorite Food - Found in Everything You Eat?
A Cancer Research study found pancreatic tumor cells handle fructose and glucose in different ways, using fructose to divide and proliferate. The finding challenges the idea that all sugars act alike and may bear on earlier links between fructose and pancreatic cancer.

Fructose promotes growth of pancreatic cancer
UCLA researchers compared how pancreatic cancer cells in Petri dishes use glucose and fructose, and found the cells route fructose through the non-oxidative pentose phosphate pathway to build nucleic acids for division. Lead author Anthony Heaney calls refined sugar a hidden danger.
