The FDA asked Abbott to withdraw the weight loss drug Meridia after the SCOUT trial found users lost 1.7 kg over 3.4 years while heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death risk rose 14%. The piece offers green tea as one alternative, noting the trials are not all consistent.

Drinking Green Tea Good for Breast Cancer Survivors
In a six-month trial, 54 overweight breast cancer survivors who drank decaffeinated green tea cut their energy intake, lost a little weight and raised HDL cholesterol, but saw no significant change in the HDL/LDL ratio or insulin resistance.

Bottled tea may contain no antioxidants
Wellgen chemist Shiming Li told an American Chemical Society meeting that six brands of bottled tea held 81, 43, 40, 13, 4 and 3 milligrams of polyphenols per 16-ounce bottle, against 50 to 150 milligrams in a cup of home-brewed tea. He says many also carry high amounts of sugar.

Green tea compound slows progression of leukemia
A Mayo Clinic phase II trial in 42 patients found EGCG, a green tea compound, showed moderate clinical activity in stabilising chronic lymphocytic leukemia. An earlier phase I trial cut blood leukemia cells by about 20% in 30% of patients and halved swollen nodes in about 70%.

Cancer News: Green Tea Prevents Lung Cancer
A Taiwanese case-control study comparing 170 lung cancer patients with 340 healthy people found that drinking at least one cup of green tea a day was associated with sharply lower lung cancer risk among both smokers and non-smokers, with growth factor genotypes also shaping the risk.

Drinking green tea may help prevent hepatic fibrosis
Korean researchers report that green tea extract cut collagen deposition in a rat hepatic stellate cell line and prevented liver fibrosis in rats given a fibrosis-inducing chemical. They suggest it may warrant study as a treatment or preventive measure.

Green Tea Extracts May Protect You From Oral Cancer
In an M. D. Anderson trial, almost 60 percent of people on the two highest doses of green tea extract showed a clinical response, against 36 percent on the lowest dose and 18 percent on placebo. The lead researcher calls the results early and not proof that green tea prevents oral cancer.

Green tea helps protect against hepatic fibrosis
In rats with chemically induced liver fibrosis, green tea extract curbed proliferation of activated hepatic stellate cells and reduced collagen deposition. The Korean researchers concluded green tea may protect liver cells and limit collagen buildup in the liver.

More green tea benefits discovered
Two findings: elderly Japanese drinking seven or more cups of green tea a day were less likely to die prematurely over six years in a cohort of 14,001, though cancer deaths showed no link; and in lab tests the green tea compound EGC raised a bone-building enzyme's activity by up to 79 percent.

Green tea prevents blood cancer
Following 41,761 Japanese adults for nine years, researchers found those drinking five or more cups of green tea a day had 42 percent lower risk of blood cancers and 48 percent lower risk of lymphoid neoplasms. The authors say the finding does not establish cause.

Green tea may prevent prostate cancer
In 26 prostate cancer patients who took four green tea extract capsules daily for a month before surgery, hepatocyte growth factor fell 18.9 percent, VEGF 9.9 percent and PSA 10.4 percent, an LSU-led study in Cancer Prevention Research found. The dose matched the EGCG in about 12 cups of tea.

Study proves benefit of green tea for leukemia sufferers
A Mayo Clinic study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found high doses of the green tea compound EGCG were tolerated by chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients, stabilized early-stage disease and were accompanied by a 50 percent reduction in lymph node size.

Green tea, capsaicin affect weight loss
Testing 27 subjects over six weeks, researchers found CH-19 sweet pepper and the combination of capsaicin and green tea significantly cut energy intake during positive energy balance, though no significant interactions on intake emerged overall. Capsaicin's effect faded with habitual use.

Breast cancer risk reduced by green tea, mushrooms
In a Chinese study of 1,009 breast cancer patients and 1,009 healthy women, the heaviest mushroom eaters were about two-thirds less likely to have the disease, and those eating dried mushrooms 56 percent less likely. Mushrooms and green tea together showed the strongest association.
