Among 17,415 healthy women followed over a decade in the Women's Health Study, those reporting high job stress faced 40 percent higher risk of heart attack, stroke, bypass surgery, angioplasty or death. Job insecurity tracked with risk factors but not with events.

Hypertension news: Phosphorus may help cut high blood pressure risk
A study in Hypertension found participants in the highest fifth of phosphorus intake had lower baseline systolic blood pressure than those in the lowest fifth, with no significant effect on diastolic pressure. CDC data showed hypertension prevalence barely changed from 1999-2000 to 2007-2008.

Flawed Study, Bad Science, Outrageous Conclusion
Dr. Mercola faults a study that fed heart attack survivors omega-3-enriched margarine, arguing the trans fat cancelled any benefit. Mayo cardiologist Stephen Kopecky called the dose tiny and noted patients enrolled on average four years after their heart attack.

Flu Shot Decreases Risk of Diabetes, Stroke, Asthma
British researchers found influenza vaccination came with 19 percent fewer first heart attacks, with larger reductions when shots were given early in the fall; pneumococcal vaccine showed no such benefit. Deaths among people with diabetes rise 5 to 15 percent during flu epidemics.

Medtronics New Stent FDA Approved
The FDA approved Medtronic's smaller, more flexible Integrity bare-metal stent, formed from a single wire by continuous sinusoid technology, which the company says may eventually yield polymer-free drug-filled stents. The piece also reviews how angioplasty and stents treat clogged arteries.

Negativity Linked to Heart Ailments
Dutch researchers pooled 49 studies of 6,121 heart patients and found those with Type D personalities, marked by negative moods and emotional reticence, were three times as likely to have cardiovascular problems and three times as likely to suffer clinical depression or anxiety.

Angioplasty vs Coronary Artery Bypass: Choose Wisely
Data from a European-American study may shift severe heart disease treatment back toward bypass surgery. The piece traces angioplasty from 1977 through the 1994 stent approval, noting elastic recoil in 5-10% of patients and restenosis in 40-50% within three to six months of balloon angioplasty.

Lethal Combo:Alcohol and High Blood Pressure
Researchers in Seoul followed 6,100 adults for 21 years and found that among men with blood pressure of at least 168/100, moderate binge drinkers faced four times the stroke or heart attack risk of nondrinkers and heavy bingers twelve times.

For Heart Health, Chocolate is a Girl's Best Friend
Short trials have found chocolate's flavonoid antioxidants lower blood pressure, and population studies tie consumption to lower cardiovascular mortality, but effects in people with established coronary disease are unknown. Murray Mittleman's team studied intake in survivors of a first heart attack.

Should McDonald's offer free statins?
Researchers led by Darrel Francis weighed the heart risk added by a daily Quarter Pounder with cheese and a small milkshake against the risk cut by statins in trials of 42,848 patients, and found most statins offset the extra fat. They suggest a free statin served alongside the meal.

Statins with your Big Mac?
Imperial College London researchers compared the added cardiovascular risk from a Quarter Pounder with cheese and a small milkshake against the risk reduction from daily statins across seven trials of more than 42,000 patients, and found the two roughly cancel. Experts say not to take it literally.

Emerging Research Suggests Heart Disease Could Have a Natural Fix!
Ninety patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors took daily oral L-arginine or placebo. Those on L-arginine showed greater large artery elasticity and lower systemic vascular resistance, along with falls in systolic blood pressure and aldosterone levels.

Healthy Hearts Indicate Healthy Brains
Boston University researchers scanned the hearts and brains of 1,500 Framingham Offspring participants and found those with low and middle cardiac output showed about two more years of brain aging than those with high output. Whether the link is causal is still unresolved.

Sleep Duration Linked to Heart Health
A West Virginia School of Medicine study of more than 30,000 adults in the 2005 National Health Interview Survey found people sleeping over nine hours a night were 1.5 times more likely to report heart attack or stroke, and adults under 60 sleeping five hours had triple the risk.

Calcium Supplements Linked to Heart Attack Risk
Pooling 11 randomized trials covering more than 12,000 women, Auckland researchers report in the BMJ that those taking calcium supplements were 31 percent more likely to have a heart attack: 143 cases against 111 on placebo. None received vitamin D, and calcium from food is excluded.

MRI: New Gold Standard in Diagnosing Stroke
New American Academy of Neurology guidelines say doctors should use a diffusion MRI rather than a CT scan to diagnose acute ischemic stroke within 12 hours of the first symptom. In one large study reviewed, MRI detected stroke 83 percent of the time against 26 percent for CT.

Sleep Apnea Increases Heart Disease Risk
Researchers followed 1,927 men and 2,495 women aged 40 and over who had no heart disease at their baseline sleep study. After eight and a half years they concluded obstructive sleep apnea is associated with higher risk of heart failure in men; the coronary heart disease link was equivocal.

Does High Fructose Corn Syrup = High Blood Pressure
A cross-sectional analysis of 4,528 US adults with no history of hypertension, drawn from NHANES 2003-2006, found higher fructose intake from added sugar independently associated with higher blood pressure, at an average intake of about two and a half sugary soft drinks a day.
