A review by Amanda Sullivan, posted on St. Catherine University's website, found that eating one or more servings of high fructose corn syrup a day is associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome in young and middle-aged women. Five of six studies agreed.

High fructose corn syrup contains reactive dicarbonyls - study
German researchers profiling 14 commercial samples of high fructose corn syrup found reactive alpha-dicarbonyl compounds in all of them, with 3-deoxyglucosone dominant at up to 730 ug/mL. They suggest production methods influence how much forms.
Nutrition
MSG, trans fat, high fructose corn syrup boost liver disease risk
In a feline model, dietary MSG increased body fat and promoted hepatic steatosis compared with controls, while trans fat and high fructose corn syrup promoted liver fibrosis and markers of liver dysfunction.

Drinking This "Popular Poison" is Worse than Smoking
Mercola argues the soda industry borrows Big Tobacco's playbook, with front groups, funded research and donations to health organizations, and cites research linking frequent soft drink consumption to a 9-15% increase in aggressive behavior, alongside obesity and liver disease.

Fructose raises risk for kidney disease, hypertension
Reviewing 62 studies, Polish researchers conclude excess fructose may contribute to fatty liver, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension and kidney disease. They note fruit brings antioxidants, vitamin C, polyphenols, potassium and fiber that may counter the effect.
Watch-List
Fructose, high fructose corn syrup may increase cardiovascular risk
In a UC Davis study of 48 adults, 24-hour triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B rose among those drawing 25 percent of energy from fructose or high fructose corn syrup, but not from glucose. The authors suggest this may raise cardiovascular disease risk.
Food
Dietary fructose linked to metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus
Feeding 29 adult male rhesus monkeys a diet with 30% of energy from fructose for a year left all of them with metabolic syndrome features including insulin resistance, and four, or 15%, developed type 2 diabetes. The researchers note most Americans get under 25% of energy from fructose.
Food
High fructose corn syrup may boost risk of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease
Rats given sugary drinks for 56 days built up more abdominal fat, higher triglycerides and impaired insulin and glucose control than rats drinking water, despite similar body weight. Only the fructose-glucose group showed raised fasting glycaemia, a pre-diabetes sign.

Corn sugar new name proposed for high fructose corn syrup
The Corn Refiners Association has asked the FDA to let manufacturers call high fructose corn syrup “corn sugar.” The article cites Princeton research reporting HFCS caused more weight gain in lab animals than table sugar at equal quantities, along with added abdominal fat and higher triglycerides.
Food
High fructose corn syrup the cause of obesity epidemic, new study suggests
A Princeton study in Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior reports rats drinking high fructose corn syrup gained more weight than rats given table sugar in equal quantity, and that long-term use raised abdominal fat and triglycerides. Bart Hoebel says this holds under their test conditions.
