In a trial of 672 pregnant women at high risk of pre-eclampsia in Mexico City, a medical food combining L-arginine with antioxidant vitamins cut the incidence of the condition. Antioxidant vitamins on their own did not protect against it.

Animal protein linked to high blood pressure in elderly people
Among 2,241 people in the Rotterdam Study, protein intake overall showed no link to new hypertension over six years. But among 559 participants aged 70 and older, high animal protein intake was tied to 37 percent higher risk, which the authors say warrants further investigation.

May is High Blood Pressure Education Month
Nearly 68 million Americans have high blood pressure and 28% of adults have prehypertension, which often progresses to hypertension. The piece sets out the thresholds: normal under 120/80, prehypertension 120-139 or 80-89, and high blood pressure 140/90 or above.
Disease
Lowering blood pressure is heart healthy
A Hypertension study followed 9,357 adults in 11 countries for over 11 years and estimated that almost 36 percent of heart disease in women and 24 percent in men is preventable. Dr. Staessen says cutting systolic pressure by 15 mm Hg helps roughly twice as many women as men.
Drug
Acetaminophen boosts blood pressure
The FDA now caps acetaminophen at 325 mg in prescription painkillers. A 2010 Circulation study of 33 coronary artery disease patients found therapeutic doses raised mean ambulatory blood pressure to 125.3/75.4 mmHg from 122.4/73.2, without changing heart rate or platelet function.
Food
Eating blueberries may cut high blood pressure risk - study
Tracking 134,000 women and 47,000 men for 14 years, researchers found people eating at least one serving of blueberries a week were 10% less likely to develop high blood pressure, an effect they attribute to anthocyanins.
Disease
Hypertension rate in the U.S. remains the same for 8 years
NHANES data show high blood pressure held near 30 percent of U.S. adults from 1999-2000 through 2007-2008, with no significant change by sex, age or racial group, while awareness rose from 69.6 to 80.6 percent and both treatment and control improved.

Lethal Combo:Alcohol and High Blood Pressure
Researchers in Seoul followed 6,100 adults for 21 years and found that among men with blood pressure of at least 168/100, moderate binge drinkers faced four times the stroke or heart attack risk of nondrinkers and heavy bingers twelve times.
Chemical
Fructose Tied to Higher Blood Pressure
Two studies offered the first evidence that a diet high in fructose raises blood pressure in men, and one suggested people eating junk food and sweetened drinks at night may gain weight faster. Mercola disputes the claim that fructose is no worse than other sugars.

Study: Virus may trigger high blood pressure
Harvard's Clyde Crumpacker found that the herpes virus cytomegalovirus causes lasting inflammation in blood vessels that over time may trigger high blood pressure, and that 30 percent of CMV-exposed mice on a high-fat diet showed atherosclerosis. He suggests antivirals may one day treat it.
