A double-blind Brazilian trial of 60 postmenopausal women found a soy supplement with 90 mg of isoflavone and hormone therapy improved hot flashes and muscle pain similarly, by 49.8 and 45.6 percent at 16 weeks. The authors say soy may be an effective alternative.

Unsafe at any dose: Hormone therapy boosts cancer death risk
A JAMA report finds hormone therapy raises the chance of dying from breast cancer, not only of developing it; the estrogen-plus-progestin combination was already tied to a 26 percent higher risk. An accompanying editorial questions even the lowest-dose, shortest-time advice.

Hormone therapy boosts risk of breast cancer death
In the Women's Health Initiative, 16,608 postmenopausal women took estrogen plus progestin or placebo for about 5.6 years and were tracked 11 years. Those on hormone therapy were 25 percent more likely to develop invasive breast cancer, and were more likely to die of the disease.

HRT Linked to Breast Cancer Death Risk
A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association found women assigned to hormone replacement therapy were twice as likely to die of breast cancer as those on placebo, contradicting the belief that HRT-linked tumors are easier to treat.

Hormone therapy raises breast cancer risk - study
A study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute ties falling hormone replacement therapy use to a drop in Canadian breast cancer incidence from 296 to about 278 cases per 100,000 women between 2002 and 2004. The study was observational, though the authors call the link likely causal.

Hormone replacement therapy boosts breast cancer risk, study confirms
Following almost 3,000 women for about 10 years, USC researchers found breast cancer risk climbed the longer hormone therapy lasted: 19% higher after 15 years of estrogen alone, 83% higher with estrogen plus progestin. Continuous users faced the highest risk of all.

Hormone Therapy Makes Comeback in New York Times magazine. Are cigarettes next?
Rosenberg attacks a New York Times magazine piece reviving hormone therapy, listing harms linked to it since the 2002 Women's Health Initiative, including 26% more breast cancer and 41% more strokes, and notes the article's sources had Wyeth ties.

Hormone therapy raises ovarian cancer risk
Among Danish women aged 50 to 79 followed from 1995 to 2005, current hormone therapy users were 38 percent more likely to develop ovarian cancer than never-users, and former users 15 percent more likely. Risk did not vary significantly by formulation, regimen or route.

HRT Increases Ovarian Cancer Risk
A Danish study reported in JAMA found women on hormone replacement therapy had a 38 percent greater risk of ovarian cancer than never-users. The absolute risk stays low, about one extra case per 8,300 women, and returns to normal two years after stopping.

Hormone therapy for prostate cancer does more harm than good
A JAMA review of nearly 20,000 men over 65 with early stage prostate cancer found hormone therapy raised deaths from other causes, such as heart disease, offsetting its survival benefit. The authors say monitoring is the better option; the therapy still helps advanced disease.
