Drug makers and patient advocacy groups in the Coalition Against Major Diseases will share a data bank on more than 4,000 patients with neurodegenerative disease, aiming to speed research and settle best practices for future clinical trials.

Burgers linked to higher pediatric asthma risk
A Thorax study of 50,000 children aged 8 to 12 across 20 countries linked frequent burger eating to asthma and wheezing, while fruit and fish appeared protective. Researchers cautioned that burgers may simply mark a wider lifestyle rather than cause the problem.

FDA Issues Warning About PPIs
The FDA warned doctors and patients that proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium, Prilosec, Aciphex and Prevacid carry a raised risk of hip, spine and wrist fractures, and said packaging will now carry a warning. It urged weighing benefits case by case or shortening treatment.

Vitamin D as effective as vaccine in preventing flu
In a randomized Japanese trial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 10.8 percent of schoolchildren taking 1,200 IU of vitamin D3 daily tested positive for influenza A against 18.6 percent on placebo — 42 percent lower. The effect was largest in children not already taking vitamin D.

Top 7 Foods That Slow Your Aging
Mercola argues that keeping an ideal weight through whole foods chosen for your nutritional type adds years of healthy life, and that processed foods, diet pills and quick-fix diets worsen health over time. He then introduces seven superfoods.

Vitamin D could fight Crohn's disease
McGill researchers found vitamin D acts directly on the beta defensin 2 gene, which encodes an antibacterial peptide, and on NOD2, which alerts cells to invading bacteria and viruses. Lead author John White says the data suggest for the first time that vitamin D deficiency can contribute to Crohn's.

Improved nutrition mitigates ALS disease
A Clinical Nutrition review by York University researchers concluded ALS treatments do not yield good outcomes, and suggested vitamin E, folic acid, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, Ginkgo biloba, melatonin and l-carnitine, plus low to moderate exercise, may mitigate the disease's effects.

Vitamin supplements may help multiple sclerosis
The FDA approved Ampyra to improve walking in multiple sclerosis, though it can cause seizures and other side effects. A Dutch study of food diaries from 80 MS patients found they ate less folate, magnesium, zinc and selenium than the recommended daily allowance.

Foods That Chronic Pain Sufferers Need to Avoid
Mercola writes that fibromyalgia pain may involve central sensitization that certain food chemicals aggravate, and recommends limiting sugar and fruit juice, cutting back on grains, especially wheat and gluten, eating fresh unprocessed food and avoiding caffeine.

Coffee health news: Caffeine drinking linked to less severe liver fibrosis
Among 177 chronic hepatitis C patients undergoing liver biopsy, those consuming about 308 mg of caffeine a day, roughly 2.25 cups of coffee, had milder fibrosis. Each extra 67 mg tracked with 14% lower odds of advanced fibrosis; caffeine from tea showed no such effect.

Diet high in methionine could increase risk of Alzheimer’s (PR)
Temple University researchers fed mice a methionine-rich diet for eight months and found raised homocysteine and up to 40 percent more amyloid plaque in their brains. Domenico Praticò says earlier human work already tied high homocysteine to greater dementia risk.

Top 12 Foods for Healthy Immune Response
Mercola lists the foods he considers the strongest immune support for flu season, starting with raw grass-fed organic milk and whey protein, and argues that eating this way beats taking handfuls of supplements or getting a flu vaccine.

Food Allergies in Children on the Rise
A Pediatrics analysis led by CDC statistician Amy Branum found reported childhood food allergies rose 18 percent from 1997 to 2007 and related emergency room visits tripled over a comparable decade. Peanuts, milk and shellfish are the most common triggers.

UNICEF finds 200 million children suffer from under-nutrition
A UNICEF report says 200 million children under five in the developing world are undernourished and stunted, and that under-nutrition contributes to more than a third of deaths in that age group. Ann Veneman calls the condition often invisible until it is severe.

Millions of U.S. children found Vitamin D deficient
Analyzing NHANES data on about 5,000 children aged 1 to 11, researchers found roughly 20 percent fell below 50 nmol/L of vitamin D and two-thirds below 75 nmol/L, including 92 percent of non-Hispanic black children. The authors urge supplements for all children.

Sodium, Artificially Sweetened Drinks Linked to Kidney Function Decline
Two Nurses' Health Study analyses of more than 3,000 women linked higher dietary sodium to greater kidney function decline, and two or more daily servings of artificially sweetened soda to twice the odds of decline. Sugar-sweetened drinks showed no such link, and the reason is unknown.

Vitamin D deficiency key contributor to end-stage renal disease
Analysing data on 13,000 Americans, Michal Melamed's team found those with the lowest 25(OH)D levels were 2.6 times as likely to end up on dialysis, and that vitamin D deficiency accounted for about 58 percent of the higher ESRD risk in African Americans. The link is associational.

Allergy Awareness Week
Food allergies affect 12 million Americans, three million of them children, and the CDC reports peanut allergy among children doubled over a recent five-year period. During Allergy Awareness Week, May 10-16, allergy groups pushed for more research funding.
