Are you eating quality eggs of New England?
Maine agriculture officials and state police searched Quality Egg of New England in Turner under a warrant, spending eight hours gathering photos, video and birds as evidence from barns holding 3 million laying hens. Supermarkets named as buyers denied dealing with the farm.

Family farmers fear being run over by food safety juggernaut
A Cornucopia Institute press release warns that food safety bills moving through Congress, among them Rosa DeLauro's HR 875, could sweep up organic growers and home gardeners. Research director Will Fantle says the industrialized food system does need a new regulatory focus.

Institute of Medicine cautioned on dangers of population-wide salt reduction
The Salt Institute's Morton Satin told an Institute of Medicine committee that population-wide salt reduction has not been scientifically established to improve health outcomes and may harm some people, and he warned that untested synthetic salt replacements could repeat the trans fat mistake.

Pork Industry on Defensive After HBO Movie. Again
HBO's Death on a Factory Farm, shot undercover at the Wiles Hog Farm in Creston, Ohio, shows pigs bashed against walls and sows hung from forklifts as "euthanasia." The piece places it alongside the MowMar, Aviagen and Hallmark cases and new industry pledges of good behavior.

Action Alert: Critical Pending Food Safety Legislation
An action alert on three 2009 food safety bills, HR 875, HR 759 and HR 1332, arguing that the industrial food system does need tighter federal oversight while calling claims that HR 875 would end organic farming a gross exaggeration.

Maryland Bills Would Require Nutrition Info on Chain Restaurant Menus
Two bills before the Maryland General Assembly would put calorie counts on fast-food menu boards and fuller nutrition data on chain restaurants' printed menus, and phase partially hydrogenated oil out of all restaurants. The Center for Science in the Public Interest backs both.

FDA Can’t Protect Americans from Dangerous Dietary Supplements, GAO Says
The GAO will tell Congress the FDA lacks basic information to police dietary supplements: no accurate inventory of ingredients on shelves, no firm count of serious adverse reactions, not even a list of herbal supplement makers. CSPI notes banning ephedra took nearly 10 years.
Advisories
Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005
Key recommendations from the 2005 guidelines: eat nutrient-dense foods while limiting saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, salt and alcohol; balance calories against activity; and get at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days, or 60 to 90 to sustain weight loss.

CU concerned about USDA's meat labeling efforts
Consumers Union wrote to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack objecting to USDA meat marketing labels, asking first that the “naturally raised” claim be withdrawn and warning that oversight of label terms is not harmonized across the department's agencies.

California bans use of trans fat in restaurants
Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB97, making California the first state to bar artificial trans fat from restaurants, phased out of most foods by Jan 1, 2010 and baked goods by 2011. School cafeterias are exempt because added trans fat is already banned in schools.
Advisories
Are You Storing Food Safely?
Refrigerate perishables within two hours, or one hour above 90 degrees; keep the refrigerator at or below 40 degrees and the freezer at 0; check with an appliance thermometer; leave room for air to circulate; and follow the storage directions on labels.

New York City starts counting calories in restaurants
New York City inspectors can now fine restaurants $200 to $2,000 for failing to post calorie counts. The rule covers chains with 15 or more outlets nationwide, about 2,000 restaurants, and 277 had been cited by July 12. A ban on artificial trans fat in menu items also took effect July 1.

AHA responds to Israel diet/weight loss study
The American Heart Association says it no longer recommends the low-fat diet used in a widely reported Israeli weight loss study, having revised that 2000 guidance in 2006. Rather than capping total fat, it now urges avoiding trans and saturated fat and eating fruit, vegetables and fish.

Warning Labels for Coloured Foods: Campaigners call for stronger action
As the European Parliament takes up rules requiring warning labels on six food colours, the Food Commission's Anna Glayzer argues the labels shift the burden onto parents and the dyes should simply be banned, citing the Southampton study linking them to hyperactivity in children.

Emergency Regs Needed for Tracking Produce, Food Groups Say
The Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Consumer Federation of America asked FDA commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach for emergency rules requiring produce traceability, arguing standardized farm-to-retailer codes would speed Salmonella and E. coli outbreak investigations.

Organic Valley—A Crisis in Confidence?
The author corrects two errors in an earlier story: the Natural Prairie dairy in West Texas runs 8,000 to 9,000 head rather than 5,000, making it the largest “organic” dairy in the U.S., and Organic Valley did not stop buying its milk in June as its CEO had said it would.

Big Apple enforces trans fat ban in eateries
From July 1, New York City restaurants must keep artificial trans fats out of all menu items, extending a first phase that covered only fry oils and spreads. Items under 0.5 grams per serving and sealed packaged foods stay exempt; first-phase compliance ran about 98 percent.
